Jason Bateman: Arrested Development Movie Coming

Finally, an Arrested Development movie is in the offing.

"It's in the works," costar Jason Bateman told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann last night. "The grown-ups are trying to work out the numbers."

He also told the Times of London the movie version — slated for a 2009 release — will have a different feel than the TV series: "When it was on TV, if you missed one word the whole third act could be blown for you. And TV is a different experience. You come home and you've got to finish a call so you miss the first ten minutes or you get snacky and you go to the fridge and you miss another two minutes, so it's a different experience to film." — J.R. Whalen

This was my Big Surprise for the day! I didn't even know it was being considered.

As sad as I was that the show was cancelled, I thought that they gave it a very, very good ending by bringing everything around full circle in the finale. I was so pleased with the wrap-up that I actually thought that a last minute reprieve would be bad for it, creatively. A movie should be a nice middle ground between keeping the circular nature of the three seasons and still giving me more Bluth laughs.

"Alas"? Are you not looking forward to an AD movie, Matt? I admit that I never got into the show, despite multiple attempts (although I think that "Bob Loblaw" is the most brilliant character name, ever) but I know people who loved it, so I'm happy for them that they get a movie.

J.R.'s byline, not mine. Always, always watch for the byline.

You're right--sorry, Matt. I usually do check them, but am trying to multi-task and forgot.

Matt how about asking JR if he meant to type "at last".

Yeah I was curious about the "alas" too. Kind of a sucky way to introduce such fabulous news.

I probably made an awkward word choice with 'alas'. The feeling I was trying to convey was 'finally, this movie looks like it's going to happen.' I'm looking forward to the film as much as anyone. — J.R. Whalen

DaMess, my thoughts exactly! Someone needs get get with the 21st century, or even the 80s in the case of the VCR.

Okay J.R. I'm no William Safire, but I think someone who writes for a living should know that preceeding a satement with the word "alas" does not mean you're looking forward to an event but just the opposite. This type of error is one of the many pitfalls of 'writing cute' - and of not being a well-veresd reader.
