American Gangster Shoots Down Box-office Record

American Gangster this weekend earned an estimated $46.3 million at the box office to become the best-opening R-rated crime drama in history. It also represents the best opening weekend for each of its stars, Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington.

With $39.1 mil, Bee Movie placed second — largely due to Jerry Seinfeld's refusal to do any press.

Rounding out the top five were Saw IV ($11 million), Dan in Real Life ($8.1 mil) and 30 Days of Night ($4 mil).

Matt, I hope you're being sarcastic re: Seinfeld's refusal to do press. If I saw him promoting this thing one more time I was ready to swat my TV!

I'm shocked at the low Bee Movie number. They've gotta be disappointed after how much they shoved Seinfeld down our throats.

I guess maybe there are more people than just me who got sick of him and that movie.

At least Bee Movie made more money than Saw IV this week!

American Gangster was one of the better films I've seen this year. I'm glad it did well--encourages studios to keep making well-acted, well-scripted films for grown-ups. And although I'll probably go see Bee Movie (I like animation and my son wants to see it), I think the overhyping did damage its opening weekend somewhat--I know the studio expected it to be the big winner.

I heard that Bee Movie isn't all that great so that coupled with the overhype doesn't bode well...

I agree...I was so turned off by all of the self-promotion for Bee movie, that I had no desire to see it....

I'm glad American Gangster did well. Almost everybody I know has a crystal clear bootleg copy. Yeah for Denzel.
