AMAs Continue Awards Shows' Idol Worship
Carrie Underwood by Adam Larkey/ABC
Two people who once hung on Ryan Seacrest's every word were big winners at Sunday's American Music Awards. Chris Daughtry's band took home pop-rock album, breakthrough-artist and adult-contemporary honors, while Carrie Underwood also scored a hat trick, winning the female country artist, country album (Some Hearts) and T-Mobile text-voted awards. Alas, backstage, the AP reports, Daughtry pulled a Clarkson by saying that American Idol "didn't make me who I am. It just gave me a chance to show everybody else who I am." You stick to that story, friend.
Double winners included Justin Timberlake (male pop-rock artist, soul/R&B album) and T.I. (rap/hip-hop album and male artist). Props are also due host Jimmy Kimmel, who, due to the WGA strike, had to ad-lib his way through the proceedings. Alas, someone was around to write that country version of "Irreplaceable" and whatever that was that Celine Dion sang.

"Daughtry" (one name - geesch, how pretentious) is so not talented. The ONLY reason he is where he is today is because of American Idol. Carrie is talented enough and pretty enough (yeah, unfortunately that counts) to have made it had she gone to Nashville, but "Daughtry" was a nobody and would have remained so without AI. Also, Adult Contemporary Artist? WTH???

No different than Bon Jovi, they're both bands going by their lead singers' last names.

Please tell me you didn't just compare Daughtry to Bon Jovi. Please tell me that.

I think the author of this piece misinterpreted Chris Daughtry's statement. I interpreted his statements to mean that AI didn't suddenly change him into a rockstar/musician but rather gave him the venue in which to show the one he'd always been...MEANING...that he would have pursued this career path with or with AI, but fortunately AI allowed him to skip to the head of the line. No harm no foul and no jab at AI. By the way, AI isn't exactly a guaranty for success, I mean where's Reuben?
Anyway, just another example of a writer having to add their own spin because their journalistic talents aren't enough to make the story interesting on it's own merit.
No - I'm not and AI fan No - I'm not a Daughtry fan,I couldn't name one Daughtry song

Daughtry, Hinder, Creed, Three Doors Down, Fuel. All these bands sound the same and are all terrible. I wish music award shows actually honored talented musicians like Ryan Adams, Tori Amos, Iron and Wine. All had amazing albums this year, but because they aren't TOP 40 they don't get honored. What a bunch of crap.

Music awards are always awful. I don't know what they base the winners on, its certainly not talent or innovation - Daughtry? I'd rather stick needles in my eyes. And yet I always get excited when someone I like wins one. I think Carrie Underwood is always very gracious when she accepts her gazillions of awards. She and Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson are all very talented, but none of them would be where they are today without AI and it sounds gigantically tacky for any of them to say anything approaching the contrary. There are tons of talented kids out there who can't get a break, and only 12 people get a chance to use that springboard every year.
That being said, I know being the winner is not all its cracked up to be and that there have been creative struggles and things they have had to go through, which apparently accounts for Kelly's issues. But still, it just sounds bad not to at least appear grateful.

Daughtry has talent. He can sing awesome and play the guitar. That equals talent.
The AMA's are voted on by the fans and Daughtry had the Best selling Rock, Pop and Adult Contemporary album of the year, so it's safe to say that alot of people bought his album and voted for him. I'm certainly not offended by what he said and it really does take alot to offend me because I'm not weak, but he didn't say anything wrong. He may have offended me if he said that he hates his fans and didn't want people of specific nationalities to buy his albums. Otherwise, lighten up!

Please tell me you didn't just compare Daughtry to Bon Jovi. Please tell me that.
Just in terms of how they're both, you know, named after the last name of their frontman. Geez.

Seriously people- the way some of you make statements like they are fact. Just because you don't like Daughtry doesn't mean that it is a FACT that he has no talent. THAT IS YOUR OPINION, so please state it as such. And Mrs.MikeyCera, I respectfully disagree with you. I enjoy most of the bands you list as "being terrible" (again your opinion, not fact), and think Ryan Adams is horrible. Obviously it's a difference in the tastes of music that we like. These award shows are all about popular culture so it makes sense for these artists to be nominated.
Also, I agree with you ajamos completely. I think the comment is misunderstood.
