Alec Baldwin Speaks Out Against Homelessness

30 Rock's Jack Donaghy may seem to care more about climbing the corporate ladder than public issues, but his real-life alter-ego, Alec Baldwin, is a different story.

The actor is speaking out against NYC Mayor Bloomberg's homelessness policies in a new public service announcement from the Coalition for the Homeless. The group's accusing the mayor of lagging on a 2004 promise to significantly reduce homelessness in the city. Per the AP, the PSA features images of people on urban streets as Baldwin relates statistics on New York's homeless numbers in a voice-over.

Baldwin, who's frequently vocal about politics, is the most recent celeb to speak out on an issue he cares about it. Do you think celebrity PSAs and outreach are effective? Or does celebrity awareness-raising generally fall flat? — Anna Dimond

I think it's great that he is speaking out on the homelessness issue, especially since--when I was homeless--he left me a message on my celphone calling me a "thoughtless little pig". I applaud his personal growth.

Come on Matt. Why even bother to ask such a question? As with anything else there are some people who will be affected positively by celebrity PSAs and some who will not.

There are ways for the rich and famous to waste their (and our) time. Making PSAs and doing charity work and raising money all have some positive effect. It doesn't even matter what the celebrity's motives are for doing such things. A million bucks raised or donated by a celebrity who is only raising the dough to enhance their own image is still a million bucks toward that cause. Ditto the effect of the PSAs.

When you ask questions like the one in this piece it seems like 'busy work'- for you and for your readers.

Well given Baldwin's political postions, it's possible that there are a whole lot of people out there who would tune out any PSA he would make.

The effect and impact of a celebrity's involvement in an issue depends on the celebrity.

Oh and great stuff as usual Gord!:^O

So, which part bothers you the most TV Gord? That Alec thinks you are thoughtless, that you are little or that you are of the, uh, oinker persuasion?;)

Well, I'm not crazy about the "pig" part, because it just gives some women yet another reason not to date me (for religious and dietary reasons...I've already had more than a few tell me I'm not kosher!), but bein' a guy, I'm outraged about the "little". :O

Oh, the responses I could give to this! But, they would all get me kicked off of the website. So, TV Gord, you are just going to have to dial up the psychic hotline and read my thoughts!]<img border=">

Alec is nothing but a "convenient liar."

He promised the world he would leave the US if President Bush was elected and where is he - still here raking in the millions of US dollars that allows him to run his mouth.

acesmades, I think you're mixing Alec Baldwin up with Cher. (A lot of people do.) Cher famously said on Larry King Live that she would leave America if George Bush would be re-elected, and suddenly that "claim" was attached to everyone who was seen to be left-leaning (or left-falling-over).

I find it beyond ironic that you label some actor as being a "convenient liar", and then in the same breath mention the biggest "convenient liar" of them all; the man who used fake evidence of weapons of mass destruction to send masses of righteous and honorable American soldiers to their deaths or to a lifetime of disability.

Yeah. Alec Baldwin is the one to go after. Good Call.
