ABC May Still Make a Play for Football Wives

ABC Studios has extended its options on the actors associated with Football Wives, the BBC-adapted sudser pilot that was not picked up at the May upfronts, suggesting the network may tackle the project after all. One of the Alphabet's highest-profile pilots this development season, Football Wives stars Gabrielle Union, Lucy Lawless, Kiele Sanchez (sigh, Nikki...), Ving Rhames and James Van Der Beek. Should ABC ultimately "pass," sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that several other networks, including NBC and Fox, have expressed an interest in it.

TPTB, I hope it gets picked up. I've been dying to see how Lawless would fair playing Tanya. And...I'm a Fan der Beek.

I wouldn't watch an American version of "Footballer's Wives" - "Baseballer's Wives"? - maybe.

I LOVED the original, I just want to see Lucy Lawless as Tanya. If she's good (I don't have a doubt in my mind that she isn't), then I'll watch. And if Van Der Beek is in uniform, then I will most definitely watch.

Sorry -- Lawless is needed back on Battlestar, so they aren't allowed to pick this up. I have spoken.

I just don't know...I am obsessed with the original, but seeing how badly the US version of Coupling was...

I'm not sure if this will translate. In across the pond the WAGS (footballers wives and girlfriends) are celebrities themselves and everything they wear, every place they go, it's all tabloid fodder. I don't know if any American equivilent. Other than Gisele Bundken and Eva Longoria, do we really even know any sportsplayers s/o's over here?

Hmmm...

So yesterday we hear ABC is resurrecting What About Jim and today they've decided Football Wives might be worth the effort. Is this common? I've never kept up with this stuff before but it sounds to me like ABC is worried about their fall schedule which is disappointing because I'm really looking forward to Private Practice(where I'm sure they won't do those ridiculously embarrassing elevator scenes again), Big Shots and Dirty Sexy Money.

It seemed like people were interested in seeing this. I would surely check it out if it aired.

It's not uncommon for networks to add shows to their schedules, it happens all the time. Shows and the actors involved are free to join another network once they have been passed on; so most of these late pick-ups are fear of losing a project with great potential to a rival network.

I think the show can be really good, especially with this cast.

BTW, I read that ABC may try placing Bridget Moynahan on this show, where would she fit or who would she replace?

After the Coupling debacle the situation seems suspect. On the other hand, The Office is good.
But I am in love with the original so this is a tough one.

This is excellent news! I'm excited (yet cautiously optimistic).

I think it won't translate as well over here. Not to mention all the limits network tv will put on it. Footballer's Wives' commercials are even too risque for network tv. Cast lineup is great but unless it airs on cable, I don't see much hope. If by some chance it actually airs, I will give it a look see.

It would really surprise me if the American version was as good as the U.K.'s. What makes Footballlers Wives so good is how racy it can be. I mean how can you have a Tanya Turner type character unless she is able to smoke a cigarette in almost every scene! Or see some guys naked butt while he is doing Tanya in the seat of a private jet. I could see this show being pulled off on Showtime or HBO but not ABC. I would give it a shot but I see this pulling a Coupling.
