Luke Perry: "I Couldn't Do 90210 Without Aaron Spelling"
Luke Perry, out promoting Hallmark Channel's A Gunfighter's Pledge (premiering Saturday at 9 pm/ET), stopped by on Thursday to shoot an on-camera Q&A with me. In addition to covering his turn as an Old West lawman, we of course talked about the new 90210 being put together by the CW. "It's that 90210 time of year," Luke joked on our walk into the video studio.
Earlier this week, Perry went on record as saying he won't be reprising his role of Dylan for 90210. In this video, he goes into some detail as to why not, explaining that the CW revisiting his former series is not the same as Aaron Spelling himself doing it.
I also asked Luke for his take on the report that Shannen Doherty is open to an encore, as Brenda. Did that news surprise him? "Nope, nope," he said. "I think if Shannen wants to work, that's a good a place for her."

Even if Aaron Spelling was alive and putting out a new 90210, I doubt Luke Perry would still do it. Which is hilarious that someone of his non-stature should say no?! I mean really what has he done since the original 90210... Not a lot that's worth any mentioning that's for sure! Just check out IMDB.com the proof is in the writing. Ha. And Just look at what a baby Tori Spelling is that she dropped out once Shannen Doherty was announced to come back. Some people just can't grow up I guess. Come on now it's the "New Generation" Which means you are no longer in high school your kids are now!
You would think he would jump at the chance seeing how he has not done much lately, But I give him credit, Unlike Tori spelling who begs to get any role she can, at least Luke can act.
I guess I'm in the minority--I can see why he wouldn't want to do it--it's like going back. Sure, he hasn't had other "big" shows or movies since the original, but maybe he doesn't want to be? I think he's got that right--to do what he wants and doesn't want.
The movie he's appearing in tonight looks interesting. I'm going to check it out.
Besides, this is supposed to be a 90210 with NEW characters, and not a sequel to the original show.
Personally, I don't blame him for not wanting to do it.
1) Pretty much no one works with Shannon more than once. There are reasons for that. 2)I think Tori has a good grip on her limits, and Shannon is one of them. 3) Tori is a much better comedic actress than most people give her credit for. She was great in Trick and NoTROIous, and several other roles where she got to play in a comedic vein. Since most of the 90210 fans haven't seen any of her work since, they really shouldn't comment. 4) Most of the 90210 crowd are B- and c-list actors anyway, but most are working actors. They aren't making mega-bucks, and wouldn't so so on the new show - the casting budget is, after all, limited. Why do something you've already done? Honestly, it wasn't great the first time.
Tori Spelling a good actress????? Are you kidding? OMG! She is horrible and Im sorry she is not attractive in any way! IMO. At least Shannon and Jennie can really act!
