« WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows
Strike May Cramp Grammys' Groove
Justin Timberlake by Michael Caulfield/WireImage.com
As if the Golden Globes' press conference wasn't enough of a wet blanket for the awards season — not to mention for the entertainment business — the Grammys may be the next event to suffer from the ongoing WGA strike, Ad Age reports.
Some of music's biggest stars — including Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent and Queen Latifah — are also Screen Actors Guild members, and the WGA is lobbying them to opt out of attending or presenting at the ceremony to show their solidarity with striking writers. While interim agreements have been made with several production studios, such as David Letterman's Worldwide Pants and the Weinstein Co., the fate of a WGA waiver for the Grammys is still undetermined.
The decision to grant a waiver "hasn't been made," WGA West President Patric M. Verrone told Extra. "Anything is possible," he added. "What's most likely to get the Grammys... on the air is a contract."
Given the current state of affairs, no one is likely to get sexy back on the red carpet anytime soon. But is the WGA overstepping? Should JT et al show solidarity, or show up anyway? How do you think this might affect the show, if it goes on at all? — Anna Dimond

I'm with you,Justeace-the writers are stepping way over the line now. I fail to see what the writers'strike has to do with a music awards show. I will be so glad when this mess is finally resolved. If you ask me,this strike will go down in history as the worst thing that ever happened to Hollywood.

cancel the awards hurt the networks, they have to refund a lot advertiser money if the show does not happen, its one of the only weapons against the networks that the union has, but it does make look like selfish jerks in a way

I guess my question is what is happening on a daily basis with the strike? Are the sides meeting daily? Weekly? Is the WGA meeting with individual groups daily? What is actually going on or is it all just one meeting a month that ends in another standoff? What is actually happening???

Nothing. Since the AMPTP walked away from the table, they have refused to communicate with the WGA. The WGA has indicated time and again, that they are willing to negotiate and are waiting for the AMPTP to come back to the table.
The AMPTP indicates that they will not return until the WGA takes 6 provisions off the table entirely (no negotiation). Although many folks have been going on about reality and animation writers, the one that is the real sticking point is the issue of new media compensation.

But is the WGA overstepping?
Yes. It's music, I don't know what union the writers of songs belong to, but the WGA should keep out of this one. It's gonna make them look really petty and frankly, desperate. I don't even watch the Grammys.
My support for the writers is dwindling. I'm more concerned for everybody else that is out of work. People say the writers have families to support, well so does everyone else, there not getting residuals for anything.

I do support the writers. The writers write for the Grammys. That is why they have the right to ask.
I do feel the more that they mess with the consumers, it is going to become a PR nightmare for them. I think that is what the AMPTP is counting on.
Hopefully, the DGA negotiations will end quickly and that will help the AMPTP and WGA get on with it while still saving face. Anyway, I certainly hope that it all gets settled quickly. I don't watch the Grammys, but I do watch the Oscars.

They should just redo the Award Shows all together. Turn them into reality game show format. Have say Ed McMahan show up on the doorstop of the winners and hand out their awards. You could keep it up for a couple of weeks easy and charge even more ad money. Since their isn't any one place to picket the WGA would have to picket all the nominees homes in case they won all over the world. You could even have special award winner watches with ET, and other shows running all over LA and elsewhere trying to figure out who won. It would be great plus we wouldn't have to watch the overly bloated and boring performances that have made me tune out the awards 5 years ago.

I'm all for the writer's strike but i don't think having people like justin, queen latifah and 50 cent not come to the grammy's going to save the problem. Also if they are trying to strike the grammy's what about the SAG awards. Are they still going to have that on Television?

Rhonda (and Anna):
The Grammy Awards broadcast is a revenue-generating event of one of the networks (CBS) against which WGA is striking. Of course they're going to picket. So, no, they really aren't stepping over the line. And my sympathies are still with the writers. AMPTP needs to get back to the table, where the writers have been since early December.

Frankly, I'm boycotting the SAG awards. I usually watch them and the Golden Globes but since SAG has aligned itself with WGA and bows down to the WGA demand that no members of the WGA attend any award show they don't deem worthy then why should any support their dumb award show. Maybe their award show will get canceled forever. Hey now that's a brilliant plan.
