Report: A Strike-ending Deal Is "Already Done"

Will the strike negotiators be home for Christmas? A "very reliable source" tells Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog that there appears to be a deal in place between both sides. "It's already done, basically," says the insider, crediting weeks' worth of back-channel note-sharing conducted by Hollywood agents. "I was told not to expect an agreement this week," says Finke, "but my source thought it was possible that the strike could be settled before Christmas."

In other words, maybe, just maybe, TV viewers won't be handed a big lump of coal for this holiday season. "I don't want to raise false hope," Finke adds. "But this source has been very accurate in the past."

PLEASE let this be true! I am so sick of hearing about this.

I just hope that whatever deal is struck benefits the writers, who are the people who (more than anyone else, even the stars) make great TV great.

I won't be holding my breath, but I will certainly be hoping that this is true! Thursday nights just aren't the same without "The Office" (yeah, reruns are good, but not the same as a new episode) and if this isn't resolved I'm going to feel the same about the rest of my TV nights very soon! *Crosses fingers and hopes that this piece of news is true*.

I truly hope and pray that this news is true, and that the writers will get what they deserve finally!

I don't understand how "a deal is already done" and "don't expect an agreement this week" line up. I mean, if the deal is actually already done, shouldn't we expect an agreement like, today?

Regardless, this is good news. I really hope this can get worked out.

I hope this is true, but I also hope the writers are getting what they want and not giving in too easily.

They got hosed in 88 and are still stuck with that mistake. Whatever they agree to will likely be around a long time, so I hope they do whatever it takes, even if that means the strike dragging on.

:^O PLEASE O PLEASE O PLEASE-Let this be true! Please give these wonderful writers, what they want! THEY are the ones who make the stories, everyone knows that without GREAT writers, there is no GREAT TV! However, I will feel extremely let down, if this deal comes through, just as they end HEROES for the season! If they end the strike, does that mean that we will finally get the HEROES spinoff???

Boy I hope this is true. Not only for our enjoyment but for the behind the scene workers who have lost their jobs and livihoods. They are the ones I am worried about.

The way I understand it, even though a deal might already be done, so to speak, none of what may have been agreed upon between both sides behind the scenes has been put on to paper yet. That's why there are what appears to be 2 contradictory sentences in "there appears to be a deal in place between both sides" and "'I was told not to expect an agreement this week.'" The "deal" would be put into an actual "agreement" in the form of a contract and voted on by both sides. Once voted on, then the strike would be over if both sides vote to accept the agreement.

This is great news, and I hope the source is reliable.

"If they end the strike, does that mean that we will finally get the HEROES spinoff???"

With the lousy ratings Heroes has been getting this season, the strike was just an excuse to kill it. Even if the strike didn't happen I'd bet they would have still dumped it, it just would have been later.

I do wonder what will happen with a show like Heroes where they turn the last pre-strike episode into a finale, and the strike ended early enough to do more episodes in the spring. Heroes has definitely been struggling, but they intend to scrap what they had for the rest of the season and reboot - I wonder if they'd have enough time to do that or if it would be a split season again like last year.

That would be really great if it happened, but I was watching Regis and Kelly this morning, and Jessica Alba raised the possibility of an actors walkout over these same issues in June.

What say you to that?

I do hope the strike is over because I can't imagine the TV landscape after the scripted shows run out BUT I think everyone keeps forgetting the OTHER people affected by this strike. Sure, the writers are getting shafted but they've caused EVERYONE involved in these shows to lose income and livelihood. They'll benefit from the ending of the strike with better pay, etc. but what about the hair/makeup people, the grips, the cameramen, the catering crews, etc? No one seems to care that those people were forced into not working. What happens to them?

The actors ARE concerned about the same issues. But the outcome of a strike will set a precedent. If the writers get what they want, the studios will likely offer actors and other union members a comparable deal. If the writers give in to a deal that the actors don't think is a good one, they could strike anyway.

Or if the writers strike drags on, the actors could just join it in a few months.

Sonny, what happens to the crews is that many of them are also union members and they also want residuals on the same things as the writers, it just goes to their health and pension funds instead of straight to their pockets. If the writers are successful, they'll almost certainly reap the benefits as well. People aren't forgetting the rest of the crews on these shows. You just need to keep in mind that they stand to benefit as well and supporting this strike gives them their best shot at getting a better shake from the studio too.
