« WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows

Late-night Hosts to Return in Unison?

Though Carson Daly's decision to resume his late-nighter has earned him some derision — just the other day, WGA members "planted" in the audience reportedly heckled the host, interrupting a taping several times — his peers might stage their own returns as early as the first week of January. Variety hears unconfirmed talk that "the Big Four" — David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and Craig Ferguson — may all return on or around Jan. 7. Leno and O'Brien are most likely to get back to work, the trade says, as the ratings for their shows have plunged by half.

Variety has gotten so many things wrong in their strike reporting, that I have trouble believing anything they say. I'll believe when I see an official statement from any of the hosts. Variety's unconfirmed sources have proven to be studio lackeys more often than not.

The late night shows didn't have to "go" off the air because of the strike. All they had to do was add more guests. the first half hour of these shows are usually filled by a monologue and some (in a lot of cases) silly skit or presentation. adding two or three extra guests would fill in this alloted time and make them what they are supposed to be .... talk shows.

Aren't Letterman, Leno, O'Brien and Ferguson members of the writer's union as well? I can't see Letterman or O'Brien crossing the picket line, though I could see Leno.

Okay, why is it alright for some hosts to return, but not others?? I guess it's all about the money you make for the network (because you know that Letterman and Leno make a heck of alot more for them than Daly does).

Really, the "Big Four?" Who decided that? I wouldn't include Craig Ferguson (or Jay Leno for that matter) on a list of the biggest late night talkers over Jon Stewart. I wouldn't even include them over Jimmy Kimmel.

Okay, I just want to make sure I read your post correctly, so let me get this straight ... you're saying that Jimmy Kimmel and Jon Stewart are bigger late night stars than Jay Leno??? Don't get me wrong, I like both JK and JS, but bigger than Leno?? I have to respectfully disagree there. And at the very least I'd put CF on par with the two of them after Letterman & Leno along with Conan and followed by Carson Daly. Hmmm ... interesting.
