Golden Globes Officially Whittled Down to a One-hour Press Conference

Though NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association attempted to hammer out a deal that would have reimagined the Golden Globes telecast as a series of NBC News specials, the lavish gala on Monday evening was officially whittled down to a one-hour press conference announcing the winners and to be covered live, Sunday at 9 pm/ET, by NBC News.

According to the "unofficial schedule" that was bandied about on Monday and cited by Nikki Finke's DeadlineHollywoodDaily.com, the Peacock proposed kicking off the evening with a 7 pm edition of Dateline featuring interviews with this year's nominees. At 8, the idea was to present a clip show of the Globes' greatest moments. From 9 to 10, NBC News would present the "press conference," followed at 10 by an Access Hollywood-style roundup of the night's parties.

Instead, NBC's annual telecast and a champagne dinner to be held at the Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom are officially canceled. "We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television," says Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. "We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year's Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled."

This is sad, obviously, for those of us who enjoy awards shows, but I say, rock on WGA!

Think of it this way: even though we will not see it, the actors will still get their recognition, and that's all that really matters.

The writers cannot back down now, this effects and ultimately will effect more guilds than just theirs, because the problems they are facing are the same ones many guilds will be facing as well when their contracts expire.

They are not selfish. They just want things to be fair, like everyone does.

WGA is getting absolutely ridiculous. I supported their action at the begining but now they are taking the action to a new level of stupidity.

Stop..just...stop.

I have a great way to fix this. RESOLVE THE STRIKE! I mean, seriously people, resolving the strike has to be easier than this convoluted senario.

WOW. it's too bad the networks aren't working this hard with the writers to resolve the stike.

It's too bad that the talent won't be able to be rewarded for their performances as in years past. I wish they would have the ceremony for them & then just not televise it. In the end, it's to recognize outstanding performances in their field. It's too bad that everything can't just get resolved.

Hmm, watching glittery people applaud each other for a couple of hours vs. thousands of writers getting a years-long fair deal (which will then set the precedent for thousands more actors and directors). Yeah, I think I can make the sacrifice.

I've wanted to see the awards shows reduced to press releases for years. This is a good start.

sdelmonte: I totally agree. I am so sick of these shows anyway. They ignore those that deserve it and only show how out of touch with the viewing public they really are. I think a press release is all they need.

kardplayer2k: There are several members of the WGA who often post on these message boards. They aren't trying to hid that at all. Of course, as this is a public forum they are well within their rights to do so.

I bet all the WGA leaders and negotiators are opening their champagne celebrating while ignoring the suffering of the production team who are supposed to get pay for doing the Gloden Globe Award Show and laughing at the viewers who are looking forward to the GGAS!!

Now they are as low as the producers!! Shame on them!!

Shame on the SAG too! Don't expect me to support their stupid award show!!!
I would be watching anything other than that SAG award show!

Can anyone tell me why they can't just have a show without the jokes and just read the nominees and give out the awards?. I know it would be boring...but it wouldn't break any rules and at least it would be blissfully short.

Um, I don't see how this works for the WGA. I really don't, I don't think they win anything over this. I know many of you will post that it does but I could care less at this point. To me, if the WGA wanted to be taken seriously, then they would take no deals at all, instead of playing favorites. Of course they gave a waver to SAG for their awards show, but if they can work out deals with David Letterman's and Tom Cruise's production team, then why not anybody else. I know people are gonna say the big studios aren't playing fair, well there probably not, but neither is WGA at this point. I feel so bad for the people out of work because of this strike, the make up artists, the hair stylists, the true people that actually are behind the shows we love. I feel more sympathy for them than anybody else.

On a side note, I think the statement released by the The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was very well played.

Am I the only one who doesn't give a damn? I haven't watched an awards show in years. They're so boring.

kardplayer2k:

The writers I have seen on these boards have clearly identified themselves. Sure, you may occasionally find some WGA member who signs up just to make a post. But look at my profile and how many posts I have made over the years. I didn't sign on to support the WGA. I just do support them.

Now look at filegirl. She's made far fewer posts than me. But in order for your theory to be correct, she'd have had to have joined at least as early as July 2006 and have left multiple posts in other blogs all as a ruse to con you into thinking there was more support for the WGA than really existed.

Same for knownasjj4ever. JJ would have had to have joined at least as far back as September 2006 and, again, made about 100 posts other blogs. All in anticipation of duping you a year and a half later when the guild went on strike.

And if the people who support they WGA have better grammar skills and are more eloquent, well, maybe that's just education. Maybe they are just considerate towards others who will be reading their rantings. Maybe it's a grammar checker. Maybe it's just who they are.

Sometimes, there is no conspiracy. But if you want to waste time looking for one, go right ahead!
