Carson Daly Returns to Work, Other Late-night Hosts Sit Tight

Carson Daly's return to his NBC show Later isn't leading a stampede of other late-night hosts — who have been benched by the writers' strike — back to work.

While they are carefully monitoring the situation, none of the more high-profile names want to risk the wrath of the Writers Guild of America, which publicly chastised Daly's decision to go back to work even though he isn't a WGA member. NBC was scheduled to stop paying non-writing staffers of Later, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Tonight Show with Jay Leno at the end of this week, which led to speculation that the shows might return soon afterwards.

But a source tells TV Guide that O'Brien, who hasn't been paid since the strike began on Nov. 5, will pick up the salaries of his show's employees next week, following David Letterman's decision to personally fund his payroll through the end of the year. Looks like its going to be another big week for Nightline. — Stephen Battaglio

I've read that Daly's show would have been cancelled if he didn't return to live shows. Wouldn't surprise me.

I've lost any and all respect I have for Carson Daly. He didn't aid his writers by going back, he dishonored them with his disloyalty.

Kudos to Conan O'Brien for being willing to pay his show's employees when NBC won't.

Ha, Carson Daly is such a loser. Even TV Guide staff doesn't watch his show to know what it's really called.

But I wonder why Daly's show went off the air in the first place. Everyone knows that comedy that bad isn't written by anyone. It's called the most expensive public access show there ever was.

he's going back so that the hundred or so people who work on the show besides the writers will get their paycheck each week. I'm sure he gets paid whether or not the show goes on but the others behind the scenes won't get paid otherwise. he deserves credit, not condemnation. he's not a WGA member so he can and should do the job he is being paid to do.

I have zero sympathy for the writer's guild. All a strike does is screw the actors, screw all those people who work on the shows that need the money and screws the fans. So now they are chastising someone who is actually being considerate to his fans and his workers? And furthermore someone who is not WGA? That would be like if a taxi union went on strike chastised a bus driver for going to work. So this I say to the WGA.... boo hoo... cry me a river. Now stop with all the strike-happiness and actually work on a deal!

Why shouldn't the writers get a bigger share of the pie, stars are making mucho bucks while the writers sit on old pay scales.

Carson is waaaay overpaid. He should stay off the air and pay his writers' salaries through the end of the year because (A) he would be less than the nothing he is without them and (B) he is a no-talent hack who deserves less than minimum wage. And he's a tool.
