What Is Your Favorite Home-decorating Show?

Sure, we may not always have the money to act on all of our remodeling desires, but it sure is fun to think about it! That is why many of us like to curl up in front of the TV with a good home-decorating show and wonder, "What if...?" — or secure ideas for projects that you do have the bucks to make happen.

What is your home-decorating show of choice? Is it more about low-cost solutions, or geared toward bigger-budget overhauls? Share your favorite here in comments!

It's a different kind of home-decorating show, but I like "Sell this House" on A&E. It's usually cheaper renovations, done well and tastefully. And the host and designer are a lot of fun to watch.

I too like "Sell This House". I also love "Clean House" with Niecey Nash. I prefer the shows that use what people already have and just add a little paint and furniture or re-purpose what they already have.

I love Decorating Cents and Design on a Dime on HGTV. DC redecorates a room for under $500 and DoaD does it for under $1000.

Divine Design on HGTV with Candace Olsen. I like her designs and she seems like she would be great to work with. I couldn't afford it, but I learn a lot just from seeing what she does.

LOVE your question, but you'll hate my answer. THEY ALL SUCK! I cannot believe what passes for design on these shows. And are these 'hosts' actually qualified designers? On one hand you have the oh-so-safe, don't freak-out middle America shows (you know the ones that make Pottery Barn look cutting edge) and on the other you have the design on 2 cents shows that are little more than really bad craft projects (they look like they were put together by Scrooge and McGuyver). And don't get me started about the shows that pretend they're about design and are really just tacky charity events (boo-hoo my life stinks now give me a coat of paint and a plasma tv). No wonder America is cluttered with McMansions and tract houses. Design should inspire not depress. Not one of these shows would pass muster to be featured in a good shelter magazine like Architectural Digest or Interior Design. Maybe someday, but not today . . .

Divine Design, HGTV

(And I tend to be a sucker for Flip that House)

I like Decorating Cents and Design on Dime before they changed hosts.

My two favorite shows are currently shown on Fine Living - but they're great. Sarah Richardson is the designer on both Room Service & Design Inc. They are informative about how to create a design and follow through to the end. She has redone everything from an apparent million dollar home, to turning an old shack on a country property into a guest space. She includes many things you can do yourself - from small building projects to craft items - but the focus is about how to change the look of a room, and how to accomplish a desired 'feel' - frequently with repainting, rearranging, and maybe even reupholstering existing sofas and chairs. She also offers great insight into how to personalize a very generic space with details, artwork or mementos. Her's is a clean, classic style, appealing to a variety of people - and it's obvious she enjoys what she's doing. They are both smart shows for people looking to have an attractive home - not a reality show gone bad at your expense.

Probably "Designed to Sell" on HGTV. By fixing up other people's homes for sale, it gives tips on how to improve my home, whether I'm selling or not. And since they operate on a $2,000 budget, they always try to fit in as much improvement as possible. Plus, the hosts are not annoying.

I really liked Design on a Dime when Kristen and Lee hosted the show. Hate these new people -- that blonde woman is the worst! Candice Olsen is awesome, but I'm sure there's a reason they don't discuss the cost of her renovations -- they are all in the 10s of 1000s. Endless money makes all design look good.

Without a shadow of a doubt,

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

I used to think Trading Spaces was interesting when it first aired, but now it is become such junk. The designers on this show have no talent or creativity at all.

I had high hopes when Paige Davis came back because I wanted to see the show turn to its original form, but they (either the designers and/or the producers) have made this show unwatchable. None of the designers know how to coordinate colors or patterns, and I am a MAN saying this.

Anyway, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is the best. Ty Pennington cracks me up week after week, and he has the best staff of designers than any other show that deals in renovating or remodeling (or even building) homes. I especially love it when Ty does that special room for that special person who needs the most. It makes me cry.

Divine Design with Candice Olsen on HGTV. Her designs are timeless and oh so classy, and I learn a lot about principles of design from her in a way that's easy to understand. She's a great TV host, and the interaction with her team is fun to watch.

HGTV's Color Splash with David Bromstead! Also Vern Yip's new Deserving Design because I like Vern's style. But, I HATE the Extreme Home Makeover wannabe aspect of the show. Also Divine Design and - when they don't stray too far into "theme" rooms - Decorating Cents and Design on a Dime.

I'm much more interested in the design shows than the shows that are more about finding/selling a house than redecorating/remodeling. (Probably because I'm not a homeowner!)

What I really miss are the better craft/art shows, like That's Clever and the old Alenes's show before its sole existance became selling that home party line.

I like HGTV's "Designed to Sell" and its quick, 30-minute format, decent host(s) and revolving crew, and a budget large enough to make some real changes. As another poster said, I hate the shows that too often rely on cheesy craft projects and homemade "art." (I'm talking to you, "Trading Spaces.") I also quickly grew tired of "Extreme Makeover" and its manufactured tears, bloated format (especially the shows that run longer than an hour!), over-the-top houses that begin to blend together, theme rooms that won't grow with their under-18 occupants, and Ty's increasingly annoying antics.

I spend most of my HGTV viewing time, though, watching all the real estate shows. I live for new eps of "House Hunters/International."
