NBC Renews Original L&O; Criminal Intent Goes to USA
The long-running drama series Law & Order avoided the death penalty Sunday when creator Dick Wolf and NBC reached a deal to bring the series back for 22 episodes next season.
Law & Order, which had slumped to all-time low numbers, was in danger of seeing its reign as the longest running scripted series on television end at 17 seasons. But NBC announced the pick-up along with a larger deal with Wolf, whose Wolf Films had its agreement with NBC Universal extended through 2012.
NBC also agreed to pick up a full 22-episode order Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The show has always been the weakest ship in the L&O fleet, but repeats are typically among the highest rated shows on NBCU’s USA Network. As such, Criminal Intent's new season will have its first run on USA and then be repeated on NBC, reversing the terms of the previous arrangement.
During a conference call with reporters, Wolf said there will be some “belt-tightening” for the two shows, which had seen their expenses go up while ratings declined, but he promised that the cutbacks would be imperceptible to the viewer, noting that no major cast changes are planned.

I am sure it's a little early to ask...but when will the second run of the new CI episodes air on NBC? I am in Canada and do not get the USA network, so I'd love to know...

It's not the flashy or uber-dramatic like SVU, but L&O: CI has always been my favorite. I'm so relieved that I will not have to get my CI fix through repeats (actually watching a season 3 epi on Bravo right now). I don't think I've ever watched the original L&O, but hey-I'm glad it got renewed too =)

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!
CRIMINAL INTENT lives !!!!!!
This is my favorite of the three L&O but all are on my top five now (Boston Legal and Two and a Half Men being the other two).
Congratulations to Dick Wolf for pulling this deal together and to the NBCU execs for the same.

This is just a guess, but I think NBC will probably run the Criminal Intent episodes on Saturday evenings. That's a dead TV night overall, and NBC would be nuts to give a weekday timeslot to a repeat.

Wow, what a week!
Scrubs renewed? Check.
Law & Order gets another season? Yessir!
Ditto for Law & Order: CI? You got it!
Now all I have to do is convince David Chase to do another season of The Sopranos and I'll be set.

Eau de Desperation, eh NBC?
Zucker'd probably seriously consider a 13 episode special renewal of Friends if he could get away with it. If they're trying to bail out tired shows instead, perhaps they could revive some old cult faves, from their network and elsewhere like Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, and buy Felicity Huffman back for Sports Night. I figure if they're throwing logic to the winds, so should I.

Or, they could run it against Idol in January. Somebody needs to be the sacrificial lamb, and it's either Dateline or CI. Better yet, why not make Tuesday an all-L&O night?

Calm down wheezy.
I think it was kind of smart for NBC to put L&O:CI on USA and then run repeats on NBC. Go where the loyal fanbase tunes in. But I'm kand of mad how the original L&O was treated. I don't watch that version very, very much, but it was real disrespectful how they put such a classic show like that on Fridays! It's been on for 17 yrs., why put it on a night where very few people watches TV? IMO it should've been on the same night as Heroes where they can get bigger numbers. That was a bad idea. Friday nights is where tv shows goes to die. Does Ed, Providence and The Lyon's Den ring a bell? Well they better hope that it works out this time. Because if it doesn't, then strike some sort of deal with TNT to keep that show alive.

Glad to see they cut a deal. The obvious reason L&O/CI does better on USA is probably because people like me watch another show at the same time. In my case, I work nights and tape Veronica Mars. And they should move L&O back to Wed. Or after Heroes. The last hit I recall on Friday/10pm/NBC was Homicide. Boy do I miss that show.
