Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Washington, Summer Jobs and Cupcakes
Jeffrey Morgan by Todd Williamson/WireImage.com
We caught up with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played Denny on Grey's Anatomy, over the weekend at the 18th annual A Time for Heroes Celebrity Carnival in L.A.
Sponsored by Disney, it's a benefit for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Celebrities volunteer their time in carnival-style game booths, including an enchanted castle and the pirate ship from Pirates of the Caribbean. Jeffrey was happy to talk about what he's been doing this summer, what Isaiah Washington told him about leaving Grey's and his special flair for icing cupcakes.
TV GUIDE: What brings you here today? Jeffrey Dean Morgan: The event and the cause.
TV GUIDE: Do you have a serious job here that you're doing? JDM: Here? Yeah, I am decorating cupcakes. That's my serious job.
TV GUIDE: Have you been practicing? JDM: I did. I got some frosting yesterday and decorated my dog's head and she looks great, so yeah, I did a little bit of practicing.
TV GUIDE: So what have you been doing for work? JDM: I've just finished three movies so I've been off for about a week.
TV GUIDE: What are the movies? JDM: I did PS. I Love You with Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler and The Accidental Husband was me and Uma Thurman, and I just finished a movie called Days of Wrath with Laurence Fishburne — a big ensemble cast on that one.
TV GUIDE: And on Grey's you keep coming back from the dead. JDM: I can see myself doing Grey's from the other side. They can bring back me and Kyle Chandler once a year to do a little thing.
TV GUIDE: Was that a fun episode to do? JDM: I had so much fun. I mean, I love those guys, I love all of them and meeting Kyle and working with him was especially fun because we have the same kind of sick sense of humor so we had a really good time shooting that.
TV GUIDE: What was your reaction to Isaiah getting fired? JDM: Oddly enough, I ran into him the day it happened at a restaurant and you know what, he's fine. He's not angry, he's not mad and he's going to be OK.
TV GUIDE: So when he said he was mad as hell and wasn't going to take it anymore, that was really just a TV quote? JDM: Yes. It was. Because I think he's already got some other opportunities and he's going to be fine.
TV GUIDE: Did he say anything to you about leaving the show? JDM: We talked about it. I think it's a little bit of a disappointment even though he didn't say that, but he's fielding offers already from every network so I have no doubt that everything will be fine and Grey's Anatomy will move on just fine without him and whatever he ends up doing will be great. — reporting by Carita Rizzo

Also, formerly and hopefully occasionally still, from Supernatural where he played Papa John Winchester. I love JDM. Thanks for the reading.
Stop killing Jeffrey Dean Morgan, writers/producers/powers-that-be!

Well, I mean, who doesn’t say they have other offers right after they got fired? It’s called “saving face”
I’ll be interested to see how Isaiah’s life goes from this point on. The man has talent but the question will be does he have enough talent to balance out his rather public weakness. Look at it this way, aside from really pissing off the gay community a studio that hires him takes on a huge liability because they already know he has a temper. If he does haul off and hit someone that person will be able to sue the studio and will almost certainly win since it was foreseeable by the studio that Isaiah might hit someone.
Plus, if the studio does try to fire him he’ll publicly threaten to sue giving them another reason no to hire him in the first place. Given that I just can’t see a studio wanting to take all those chances. He isn’t THAT good.
Anyway, on topic, it’s nice to see JDM is doing well. I always felt he got the shaft when his new series never came to be while, clearly pushed by the network, Shonda created a Grey’s spin-off in its place. I’m glad he’s getting film work.

That's right. The real question is, What kind of offers is he getting?
I mean there's a sizeable status differential between, say, the lead on CBS' CSI: Honolulu and the new volleyball coach on The N's Degrassi: The Next Generation.
So, we'll just see where he ends up.

I don't think that show is totally dead yet. Seems like I read where Rhimes is still working on it.
I hope so. It sounded interesting, and it would be nice to see her tackle a different milieu.

Sigh. JDM is cute and all, but wow, he's drinking the Kool-aid.
Then again, I guess he has to, assuming that the Shonda Rhimes journalist show ever crawls out of Purgatory.....

He didn't get fired. His contract wasn't re-newed. How can you be fired if you're not under contract?
I'm sure he was fielding offers as soon as his contract was up. Most actors do.

I love Jeffrey and love to see he is doing so well, but why no questions on Supernatural? Inquiring minds want to know, will he be back on Supernatural, either as a spirit or in those wonderful flashback sequences?
John Winchester is his best role and we love him and always want him back. Best of luck on all his other projects, but we need him on Supernatural too.

What happened to the show Shonda Rimes was working on with Jeffrey Dean Morgan about a newsroom? Is that ever going to happen?

I'm not familiar with this actor, because I don't watch the shows that he's on, so when I saw this picture, I thought that it was Robert Downey Jr. with a beard! Or maybe Raul Julia's son!
