Heroes Creator Solves Finale's Biggest Mystery

You've been wondering, we've been wondering, and you have to figure that Niki, Claire, HRG/Noah, Matt, et al, were wondering, too. At the conclusion of the Kirby Plaza skirmish on Heroes' first-season finale, why didn't Peter just fly his explosive self up, up and away, instead of making Nathan take one for the team, as well? Presented by TV Guide with that burning question, series creator Tim Kring pauses before saying, "You know, theoretically you're not supposed to be thinking about that."

When assured that viewers are, Kring confirms that — as many have theorized — radioactive Peter's other powers were "incapacitated" at that pivotal moment, and "somewhere in there is the explanation" for having Nathan grab his bro and do the "flying man!" thing. "But the real explanation is that we wanted Nathan to show up and [save the day]!"

"Yes, I will admit that there’s a very tiny window of logic there," Kring continues with a laugh. "But what can I say? It's requires the proverbial suspension of disbelief." Which, when airing opposite 24, a season finale is certainly allowed. — Matt Webb Mitovich, with additional reporting by Michael Logan

I'm actually a little disappointed. I know we should be lost in the moment, but the first thing I said when Nathan ran in was "Why doesn't Peter just fly out?" My wife and I then came up with several possible explanations.

But the viewer shouldn't have to. And to see that the official explanation was "because Nathan had to save the day" shows a weakness on the storytelling I wouldn't expect from Heroes

It was THE ultimate scene for the season. The scene everything had built up to, and we're supposed to just not notice something major like that without an explanation?

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Heroes and will eagerly await next season. I just hope they respect the viewer more and don't let a slip like this happen again.

Yep. I'm pretty sure I said pretty much that exact thing yesterday.

I don't know why people have to think so much into things. There doesn't always have to be some underlying message or reasoning or logic for something to happen. Just take it for what it is, entertainment!

Well, my thinking on it was Peter was so stressed and trying very hard to NOT explode that maybe he couldn't concentrate on flying at that moment.

Because I think if I was concentrating all I had on NOT blowing up myself and a whole town, I would be a little preoccupied to try and focus on flying.

It is the same thing as why DL just didn't phaze the bullet through him and Nikki. Because you have to focus and concetrate.

I am personally glad to see Nathan came running out and sacrifice himself. I thought it was very touching and aligned with the theme of the series--sacrifice oneself for the better good and lvoe conquers all.

Why are people thinking that Nathan died. It is posible that Nathan may have dropped Peter the moment he went nuclear and speed fly out of the way of the impact area. It would be stupid of the writers to get rid of the one guy that can truly fly. Peter is number two that can fly too but he's just a tracer.

I figured that Peter was unable to use the other powers when he told Nathan "I can't do anything."

As for Nathan surviving, I'm worried about him. Not because of the blast, becuase I think he could have flown away, but because of the radiation. Just touching Peter in that state must have exposed him to massive amounts of radiation.

I am willing to accept the tiny window of logic in order to have my favorites back. This is a television fantasy show, not a reality show! I agree with Leah - take it for what it is.

Loving Heroes...

...radioactive Peter's other powers were "incapacitated" at that pivotal moment...

I'll buy that.

Quite simply, I always thought that he could only use one power at a time. When he was going nuclear he had no ability to control (i.e. turn off) that power and couldn't use any of the others. We never see him use multiple powers in the past so why could he do it now? We have also seen that he neds training to use some of his powers so it would be no shock that although he has the ability to fly, he's just not good at it.

Scorned1, a friend of mine said the same thing. Nathan flew Peter up really high and dropped him and got the heck outta dodge. I think the real point of Nathan coming was to redeem him as a person and have him show some real strength for once. And not just a puppet for his mother and Linderman's machinatiions.

Don't forget the fact that Claire was suppose to kill Peter by shooting him when he did "start". I figured it was assumed that only one power could be used at a time. Otherwise, how could she kill him like he wanted if he shared her healing power? Being shot could be healed. She proved it when she told Matt to shoot her when her family was being held hostage.

Wow. Still harping over the 'why didn't he fly away himself' thing. I am not gonna even read these anymore! Haha. DUDE WAS ABOUT TO EXPLODE! His more powerful power he couldn't control and somehow he we going to bust out flying? I don't think I could ever create a tv show or movie cause I would pull my hair out from people examining every single moment instead of stepping back and enjoying it.

I would like to see next season end with a two hour finale.

I totally agree with you, cjdub. Leave it alone. It ended just fine. Most likely Nathan did get away from Peter before he exploded. Did anyone catch the whole eclipse scene? It was the picture Jacob had painted last.
