Is This the End for the CW's Girlfriends?

During Monday night's seventh-season finale of the CW's Girlfriends, William and Monica got back together; Maya and Darnell found a new house and bought back Darnell's old garage; and Aaron proposed to Joan. Basically, everyone got a happy ending — including Lynn (who'd landed her first regular paying gig only one week before). But it was all just too jubilant and tidy. Everyone and their mama showed up for Joan's surprise engagement party — her parents, her boss, her one-time assistant Peaches, and even her dry cleaner! The shindig could have easily doubled as a series farewell reunion show. And many who watched the finale had to wonder: Could this in fact be the end of Girlfriends?

Insiders close to the show say CW execs have not tipped their hats either way. Officially speaking, creator and executive producer Mara Brock Akil will not find out if Girlfriends will get an eighth season until next week, mere days before the CW's May 17 upfront advertising presentations in New York City, but ratings for the show are down this year. Unofficially speaking, it didn't look good, so Akil and the other producers were prepared just in case, writing an ep that would work as a season or a series finale. "I think Joan getting a proposal would be a beautiful way for it to end," star Tracee Ellis Ross told TV Guide. "That works for me," she added. "I know that I would be happy to come back. But if Girlfriends ended, I would be OK."

Tracee might be fine, but what about us? Girlfriends and its spin-off, The Game, were among the first shows to be picked up when the WB and UPN merged to create the CW. It's one of the highest-ranked series among African-American viewers. If canceled, it would be missed. — Reporting by Rochell D. Thomas

While I would miss the show if it ends, this isn't a bad place to end it. The loss of Toni has made the show seem a little off its game, though I've liked how they have integrated Monica into the story. I think Joan's life has gotten a little repetitive, too. Too many "loves of her life," too many career detours. The only Girlfriend who has had a consistent life trajectory is Maya. If the show does come back next season, I hope they build from this season's finalé and take everyone in a consistent direction.

I'm surprised to realize I'll miss The Game if it is cancelled, too. When I watched the first few episodes, I wasn't impressed. But the show has matured considerably since then. I hope they give it a second season to build on that foundation.

I'll miss the show if it gets cancelled but I agree with the previous poster about the consistency. One minute Joan was a confident lawyer, now she's a desperate 35 year old. Last night's show was a mishmash. Brock suddenly comes out of the woodwork? Why wouldn't Joan tell her friends that she asked Aaron to marry her and she felt stupid? Maya and Lynn are her FRIENDS!! If she can't confide in them what's the point? The finale was poorly written.

I agree with you Staley. The Game has blossomed into a good show. Even if Girlfriends doesn't come back (as I've written about here), I'd like for CW to give The Game a chance. And since both shows are from Mara Brock Akil, I see no reason why there can't be a little crossover here and there - Joan and Melanie are cousins and Darnell is a Sabers fan.

I disagree with most of the comments stated above. Although, I miss Toni Child's character I still love the show and will miss it dearly if it is cancelled. "Girlfriends" is a great show which has given many 30 year old women issues to think about. I agree Joan's character needs plenty of work but I don't believe it should be the end of a great sitcome.I hope CW will give the show atleast one more year to boost its ratings.

I would love to see the show come back.
I have seen every show since it first started. This was a family fun night for me and my daughter, now it seem like one of the main show's we love has come to an end, could you please bring it back. It would be nice if they could bring toni back so I could see the baby. I think her and Joan need to make up. She should have been at Joan's engagement party like every one else that would have been a good time for them to come together. Toni was one of my favorites she had come a long way since the beginning of the show. please bring it back I think the rating can go back up.

Where do I begin? Girlfriends is this best. I have seen every eposide, and I love them. I have even watched the reruns, and record them on my DVR. So when ever I get bored or there is nothing to watch or when I just want to watch the show I just go to my DVR. I love this show so much that it feel like they are my girlfriends. I am 22 married and a mother of 2 young ones, and I cam relate to this show. And now that Joan is engaged the show can not end. Especially since Joan has been waiting all her life to have that dream wedding and the married life. I would also like to see Toni and the baby. Toni and Joan has been friends for to long to just let it all end. Especially now that Joan is going to get married and have that family that she always wanted. I know I might sound crazy when I say this but when Aaron proposed I cried like a baby I was so happy for Joan. So please don't take Girlfriends away. I believe that if there is another season the ratings will go up. No matter what happens I will always be Girlfriends biggest fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-x
