Scarlett Johansson's Music Video Debut!

We heard that actress Scarlett Johansson had been dabbling in the music realm with a record deal and an album featuring songs by singer-songwriter Tom Waits. But based on the snippets we heard from the starlet's first record, titled "Anywhere I Lay My Head," we didn’t really know what to expect when it came time for her to create a music video. Alas, the wait is over. Behold — Scarlett Johansson’s debut music video, "Falling Down." It's… umm… well… yeah. Let’s just say it’s a bit more sophisticated than we’re used to.

Your take: What do you think of the music video — compelling or too artsy? Do you give the actress credit for not going the sugar-pop route like so many other young stars who make the transition into music? Or should she just stick to acting and leave the singing to pros?

It's pretty terrible. Its kinda like Sinead O'Connor but minus the ability to sing. She would have been better off putting out an overly manufactured Britney-style pop song. ScarJo can't go from being the eye-candy in a Justin Timberlake music video to covering Tom Waits. Ashlee Simpson should win a grammy by comparison.

Tom Waits has an interesting sound to begin with that nobody should try to replicate. Just check out his song "God's Away on Business." It gives me nightmares

Ow.

Never has a fast-forward button been so sorely missed.

I love Scarlett but this is the worst song I've ever heard. And the video is pointless. You're right Adam... it's like Sinead without the talent. When will these starlets learn?

Are you guys crazy? This song is absolutely beautiful -- it's the Ronettes meets Portishead meets geetar-pickin' Loretta Lynn. I thought Scarlett was just another bimbo starlet, but I herewith change my mind. (True, she can't sing, but everyone knows art-rock folk don't need that skill.) And hey, David Bowie doesn't do vocals for just anyone, folks!

Some help here people.

Is it better with sound or without? I'm at work and don't have speakers available.

Then again, if she sounds alt-rock, maybe the video is better as a silent feature...

No speakers at work? Go out and buy a lottery ticket. It's your lucky day today!

Man, I am so never getting into another ScarJo movie junket ever again.... Sigh.

I kinda liked the song... the harsh/gauzy distortiony stuff in the background appealed to me, and I liked her voice bla bla bla! That said, I'll prolly never listen to it again. Not bad for a listen tho.

They must be crazy--or, perhaps they just don't have any taste.

In this age of the overly produced tripe that gets handed down to us as music, its refreshing to hear a raw talent with minimal production sing poignant lyrics by Tom Waite.

The video seems to play off the lyrics to reveal the superficiality of show business and the fascination with celebrities.

I did not care for the video but the song itself is not bad. I am not planning on running out and buying the album but if I heard that song on the radio I would not change stations. I will give Scarlett (major) points for not going the "pop" route.

Ugh...zoinks...vomit..."falling down" to the ground convulsing. And, that's just my reaction to Salman Rushdie nuzzling Scarlett. Now I want to destroy my speakers AND my monitor.

My last two exposures to Scarlett have been this and "The Black Dahlia" on cable. I'm having some buyer's remorse. I should go watch "Ghost World" again.

Wow. Is there nothing too awful for these entertainment-types to throw their money at?

Scarlett may be cute and all, but me no likey that song. Maybe she shoulda taken some notes from Justin Timberlake.

I like the song alright...but, she really doesn't have much in the way of vocal range (or talent for that matter). This is fine for the generic manufactured garbage we usually get, but for something "artsy" and outside the norm well...not so much.

The song as a whole actually reminds me more of Mazzy Star than Sinead though. Song probably would have been better if it were Hope Sandoval singing too... :)

PS--is that David Bowie I hear singing backup?

Hmm, that was surprisingly not awful. I also find it ironic to criticize someone for not having a very good singing voice when they're doing a cover for a Tom Waits song.
