After what seemed like a covert operation to keep all the secrets of Cloverfield under wraps, tonight’s the night we’ll finally get some answers. Like, what in the hell kind of monster would rip off the Statue of Liberty’s head and chuck it into Midtown? Not cool! Better start ordering those tickets in advance because we’re sensing a sold-out opening weekend.
Your take: Think this movie is going to live up to the hype?
Like many a Lost Episode, Cloverfield moved hard and fast to a strong climax that just never was leaving one very unsatisfied; very much like Lost. The cinematography was a great gimmick but after an hour of it one starts to beg for an early ending or anything to break up the camera chaos. It's a real shame because this movie had the potential to be a great Godzilla meets Alien Invasion flick and would have been if only a few changes were made here and there like a break or 2 in the film from the camera-gone-wild-on-tilt-a-world marathon. I understand why they went for the hand held camera perspective and I believe it worked well and would have been far more solid an angle if it were a compliment to the movie as a whole and not encompassing all of the movies filming. And what’s worst of all is in the end, and I’m going to word this so as to avoid any spoilers for those who plan to see the film, there is no closure on the film as far as how it started. This will make more sense once you’ve seen the movie. In the end I believe most of the theatre audience was expecting, as I was, for some type of final post-creature incident scene giving a nice end to the storyline. But alas in true JJ Abrahams fashion things just stopped; very much like your first make out session and your partner unexpectedly gets up and leaves without a word or even a sign as to why.
Is this what Hollywood calls movie making??? I am so sick and tired of the alien movies, or the lame horror movies that hollywood spend millions of dollars on. If they want to do a movie based on aliens, blood, sweat and tears why don't they use the millions to make a movie about the people in DARFU Africa who are going through the genocide. That should win JJ Abrams an Academy Award.
