Lost Finds End Date; Final Seasons to Air Uninterrupted

The spaced-out odyssey will end in 2010. Monday's Hollywood trades are reporting that ABC's Lost will run for 48 more episodes over three seasons, each of which will consist of 16 episodes and air uninterrupted.

Executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse months ago expressed their desire to set an end date around the 100-episode mark — though this actual plan racks up 119 (a third of which will have only seemed to be Jack flashbacks). They've now signed on to stay on until the swan song. Lindelof tells the Hollywood Reporter that setting an end date is "incredibly liberating. Like we've been running a marathon and we actually know where the finish line is, for the first time." Adds Cuse, "We can now really map out the rest of the series in confidence. We sort of view Lost as a mosaic. Now there are only 48 more tiles that go into that mosaic, and we're figuring out... exactly where they all go."

Even series cocreator J.J. Abrams, off helming a new Star Trek feature, chimed in on the news, e-mailing Variety to say, "It is the right choice for the series and its viewers. It takes real foresight and guts to make a call like this. I applaud ABC and [the studio] for making this happen."

Crazy, crazy news! What a smart, bold move by ABC. Now Damon and Carlton can start building toward the end, the way I wish The X-Files would have done. Nice!

I am with Marcus Dixon. I don't want to see the show end, but I am glad we know when it will and that Damon & Carlton can play out the stories in a set time frame rather than rushing or trying to fill time.

I am noting May 2010 on my calendar.

So since seasons 4, 5, and 6 are only 16 eps each, does that mean they will start in February and go through until May? or will they start in January?

I'd rather have 2 more seasons at 22 episodes than 3 at 16.

Excellent. This was a great idea by the network and creators. The show and its mysteries seem much more bearable with an end in sight. And this is a diehard fan speaking!

It's weird to think there are only 48 episodes left... that's basically two seasons as we know it. Weird.

This is also good news because it means I won a bet with my dad that the show will run 4-7 seasons. (He said it would barely last 3.)

4, 8, and 16?

The numbers are bad! The numbers are bad!

I'm glad that the show's producers/creators can now map out the rest of the stories with confidence.

However, why not two seasons of 24 episodes each, instead of three seasons of 16 eps each?

ALL the remaining episodes can be Jack flashbacks, and that will be fine with me!

Glad they've got an end point and that we're building toward it. This is such a great show.

I agree, this is a super plan....and I also agree that The X-Files should have done the same thing!!

Wow, I'm both sad and happy at the same time with this news! 3 years is going to go by so fast! I'm really going to miss this series and how it challenges it's audience to use it's brains in a day of forumlaic television dribble. At the same time, these last 48 episodes are going to be so tight and focused their won't be an ounce of filler!

I'm glad there's a future end plan because now they have time to put all of the pieces together and come up with answers that should keep at least most of us happy rather than just have to give it an end because it's time has unexpectedly come.

I too wish it could be more episodes in two years but maybe having 3 years to wrap it up will have them deliver an even better solution for all of these wild things that are happening on the Island. LOVE THE SHOW but know it's got to end sometime and knowing they'll present us with answers to a whole lot of questions (with more building I'm sure during the next few years) makes me happier.

Why 3 seasons of 16 shows instead of 2 at 22?? Come on people - this is easy to figure out. More revenues coming in for that extra season, its always about getting that last $.

I just wish they would have made an announcement like this as soon as the show became a hit. That is what would have taken the real foresight and guts Mr. JJ Abrams.

This is absolutely the right decision by ABC and the producers. Having an episode total of 120 hours feels exactly right for this classic series, although I do wish the 48 remaining hours could come to us sooner (over 2 years instead of 3). With the stewardship of the show ensured to stay with the creators from brilliant beginning to what certainly will be an emotionally satisfying ending, "Lost" now has the possibility of going down in television history as one of the greatest series ever made.
