It's Official: Maksim Won't Be Dancing this Season
Maksim Chmerkovskiy by Paul Redmond/ WireImage.com
When the roster of celeb hoofers and pro partners is announced for Dancing with the Stars' sixth season, one fan fave will be missing: Maksim Chmerkovskiy. "He just needs a break," an ABC spokesperson tells People. "He is part of the Dancing family, and he will be back" — perhaps for the occasional results show, and quite possibly as part of a Season 7 team.
"The 25 million viewers are going to remember me whether I'm there or not," Maksim — who in the past two rounds led Mel B. and Laila Ali to the finals (yet never claimed the crown) — told TVGuide.com back in December, when word first spread that he might take a break. In fact, the 28-year-old let slip his intention to skip Season 6 in that same interview, only to "backtrack" a day later upon seen his declaration in print. "I was like, 'Ah, what have I said?' It was very tear-jerky for me," he said then. "When I had a free moment, I read all the e-mails and looked at my fan site and people were just devastated, to say the least. I didn't mean to do that."
Dancing with the Stars will reveal its celebrity contenders on Monday's Dance Wars finale, then detail the pro pairings on Tuesday's Good Morning America. The stars will meet their partners for the first time on Thursday's Oprah Winfrey Show. Season 6 premieres March 17.
POLL: Will Maksim's absence make you any less inclined to watch Season 6? Vote here.

I will still watch DWTS, but it's really going to be a bummer without Maks! It's been so much fun watching him come out of his shell, from that stern killjoy in the first season he was on to the goofy, fun guy we saw in the last season. I hope he shows up often in the professional dances. For that matter, I hope they put some emphasis back on the professional dances. Last year they didn't seem to have as many. I love when ALL the pros dance together.

I will miss having maks there, he is the one who got me interested in this show. There are a lot of great pros there so I will still be watching, but he was a BIG BIG draw for me and a lot of other people.

Considering he and Mel B were robbed of the title, I don't doubt he wants a break! I will miss him, but the show will go on, and be great entertainment for me. It will also give me the opportunity to "crush" on another one of the male dancers!

This guy created too much negative drama on a program that is suppose to be light and positive. If he does not like the rules of this particular game show, he should play a different game. Donald Trump would have said, “Your Fired” a long time ago -- The Donald does not like to hear all this whining nonsense. This is suppose to be Dancing with the Stars, not the Crybabies or Sore Losers...
The Spice Girls received good publicity and a boost from this program; Both Mel B. and Laila Ali received very positive exposure from this program -- when Laila danced for her father that was such a touching moment.
When these celebrities work so hard to learn dance styles and techniques, we as viewers are inspired and intrigued by the effort and passion of the participants. The fact that Mel or Laila would put their lives aside and work so hard to learn a new and difficult skill in such a short period of time -- that is motivating to those of us with boring, uninteresting lives...
You need to add sugar and water to the lemons in order to make Lemonade -- hopefully Maks will add a little sugar and water to his sour attitude. Maks certainly knows how to dance, but needs to learn a few new people skills.
