Cheryl Burke Addresses "Completely False" and "Absurd" Tabloid Tale

You can see the hurt written all over her face. Two-time Dancing with the Stars champ Cheryl Burke, 23, is battling her way back to normalcy after becoming the target of vicious print rumors that she and her married celebrity partner from Season 2, Drew Lachey, had an affair during this winter's national Dancing tour. "The story is completely false. And absurd," Burke quietly said after Monday night's performance show. "I'm just glad that I have friends that stick by my side and know the truth. They were with me 100 percent of the time on tour. I rode buses with [the other dancers, pro and celeb] and we hung out together 24-7."

Some of Burke's peers know what she has been subject to. "I feel so bad for them because I know them personally and I know that nothing ever happened between them," says Tony Dovolani, who himself was the focus of tabloid rumors after his third-season partner, country singer Sara Evans, left the show in the midst of an abrupt divorce from her husband. Dovolani acknowledges that Dancing, which celebrates sexual chemistry on the dance floor — and has sometimes led to real-life romance — is the perfect petri dish for gossip. "But this is so unfair," he says, shaking his head.

The pros have closed ranks trying to protect and support Burke. Julianne Hough, 19, has had to quell rampant speculation about her love life twice before. "The reason I could handle it at all is that I knew it wasn't true," says Hough, who was romantically linked with Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves. "You just say, 'Whatever. Who cares? I know it's not true.'"

Much loved by her Dancing colleagues, Burke's bubbly personality has been markedly subdued by the pain this story has caused, not only to her, but to Lachey, his wife and their family. "That's what hurts me the most," says Burke, "that there's a whole other family that the rumors are affecting. Lea couldn't come on this tour because Drew had to fly back and forth to L.A. [to host ABC's Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann] and it was too much for the baby. But she's come to the other two tours and to every show. She's always been a part of it."

How has Lea been handling it? "She has been supportive of me 100 percent," says Burke. "But Drew's been a little bit down, and so have I. We're just trying to make it through." — Deborah Starr Seibel

The public's fascination with stories like this is sad. Simply because two people dance together and go on tour together they are subject to outlandish rumors because the press wants to sell more magazines. But I don't buy the argument that the media is entirely at fault: if no one was interested, they'd stop printing these stories.

The sad part is that so many of the news outlets and gossip sites ran this story as fact. Nobody cares if there is no truth to it at all, they just use it as an excuse to call her every name in the book. Sadly, it's her reputation that is getting ruined, not his. At least the other dancers are behind her.

I have watched Cheryl Burke. From day one. I see dedication to her dance. I see that she is a good friend. To everyone she meets. Not one mean bone in her body.

I see Drew as a loyal husband and father. He has been a good friend of Cheryl's. Key word friend.

I hate the fact that the media is raining on Cheryl's parade. I stand behind both of them 100%

I think you are more likely to suspect someone is having an affair if you yourself are prone to them.

So....what does that say about the morons who started the rumors in the first place, hmmmmm?

So why doesn't the media go after the guy that was suppose to start the rumor? That Lawrence dude. He was the one that went screaming like a girl when he "caught them". Lets get his side in the public.

I can't believe that people actually want to work for a rag that reports gossip from "sources" as news. The Star is not exactly reputable and it amazes me that people believe the tripe that it prints. Innuendo and rumors are not news.

This has to be very distracting for Cheryl and her new dance celeb partner Cristan on DWTS and it's very harmful to her family and Drew's family.

I never, for one minute believed that Cheryl and Drew had an affair. To me, they seem like two very upstanding people. It's obvious that Drew is a dedicated family man and that Cheryl conducts herself with nothing but class. It's unfortunate that these rumors even made it to print.

I wouldn't be too quick to blame Matthew Lawrence. He probably had absolutely nothing to do with this story--which I'm sure was fabricated in its entirety by the ever-predictable liars at The Star tabloid.

I THINK IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE, INSENSIBLE GREED THAT MOTIVATES RAG MAGAZINES TO PRINT SUCH LIES WITHOUT ANY REGARD FOR THE INNOCENT CHILDREN, SPOUSES AND ALL FAMILY MEMBERS OF ANY TARGETED CELEBITY. FOR THESE INNOCENT PEOPLE TO BE PSYCHOLOGICALLY SCARED BY THE HUMMILIATION, EMBARRASEMENT AND STRESS IS UNACCEPTABLE BY THESE RAG MAGAZINES JUST FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING MORE BLOOD MONEY. I WISH EVERY SINGLE INNOCENT HUMAN THAT WAS THE TARGET OF THESE SLIZZY COMPANIES HAD THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO FIGHT BACK IN A COURT OF LAW. THESE DIRT BAG COMPANIES NEED TO BE FORCED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BLATEN LIES THEY PRINT JUST FOR THE SAKE OF GREED.
CHERYL AND DREW, WE ARE SORRY FOR WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH AND WE SUPPORT YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES COMPLETELY.
