My Favorite Cable TV "Tough" Guys

Last night I was thrilled because one of my favorite reality series, Miami Ink, started up with new episodes on TLC. I love Ami James and his whole wild crew, so much so that I have a Miami Ink calendar on my desk at work and I've seriously considered switching cell phone plans so that I could get one of the exclusive razors with Ami designed artwork. Mind you, I don't have any tattoos, or immediate plans to get some permanent inking done on my skin, but I'm constantly fascinated by the process and the amazing designs that the guys and gal at Miami Ink come up with.

Last night's episode reconfirmed for me why I love this show, the group goofed around and tattooed each other with silly cartoons, but when Ami created angel wings for a girl with a very tragic story, he looked personally moved. Ami's co-worker Nuñez, who has a way with the ladies, even seemed a little overwhelmed when helping a customer propose to his girlfriend. And Nuñnez generously threw a big bash to reward his crew for a year of really hard work in the shop, while Yoji thoughtfully arranged for cool personalized transportation for each of his co-workers.

Then this morning on my way to work I walked down a different block and saw this enormous billboard of Duff Goldman, aka the Food Network's Ace of Cakes. He comes off as a tough guy who uses saws and welding tools in order to design beautiful confections, but he's sweet as pie. I got a chance to speak to him recently and he was a genuinely cool guy. Very chatty. Oh, and did I mention that I really, really don't like to eat cake? Still, I don't miss this show. Anyway, the big billboard in the middle of Times Square has him with "Bake Cake" "tattooed" across his knuckles, but I think like Ami and Nunez, he's just a hard working guy who wants to work hard and create and original product.

Lastly, I just heard recently that Steve Watson, the host on the sadly short-lived Monster House, is working on a new HGTV series. I'm sure that while he'll be helping out with cool home improvement projects, they will be far from your traditional DIY project. I've got a pretty vanilla decorating style, but I secretly would love to have my patio or basement be done over all wild and crazy.

I'm far from a tough girl, but I really look forward to watching these "tough guys" to see their softer sides. Are there any reality TV "tough" guys that you can't get enough of? Let me know.

One of my favorites who tends to lean towards looney is John Force of "Driving Force". The guy shows more emotion than his daughters show skin - but still manages to drive his top fuel dragster over 3oo miles an hour. The show is very entertaining and one that I truly do love!!

Another defunct reality TV tough-guy of course would be Jesse James from Monster Garage who loved to crash and thrash everything in and around him until you give him a homeless puppy or under-privelaged kids who need direction. For those people who ask how Sandra Bullock ended up with someone like Jesse obviously never saw his show - he is truly a softy at heart!!

I loved this show from their very first episode! Please keep discussing Miami Ink in your blog; I love hearing about it. I find it better than A&E's Inked though both shows feature really talented people. I think I like Miami Ink better b/c of the camraderie.
