Indie Film Producers: Hey, We're Not the Bad Guys!
As media coverage continues to pit "the writers versus the producers," a group of 85 indie filmmakers want to make it clear that they don't figure into the work stoppage. As Linda Goldstein Knowlton (whose producing credits include Whale Rider) tells the Los Angeles Times, "Actually, the Writers Guild is negotiating against an entity" — the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the same group that took out the ad in Monday's trades — "that represents studios, network and multinational conglomerates." Adds Julie Lynn (The Jane Austen Book Club), "[In coverage of the strike] it is almost viewed as a dispute between the writers and producers [but] while the AMPTP has 'Producers' in its name, that's not really what it is." A statement signed jointly by the 85 indie producers notes, "It serves the studios' interests to pretend to represent the individual producers instead of corporate entities."
The group goes on to say, "We do not dispute the need for residuals [for writers], including those from DVDs and new media. It is only fair that the creators of films and television share in the proceeds from all of the ways the product... may be exploited."
