Ellen DeGeneres Defends Her Crossing of Picket Line But Still Gets Dissed

Today on Ellen, DeGeneres will defend her decision to cross the WGA picket line and continue with her show. But to at least one former associate, the choice is simply indicative of DeGeneres' overall dismissive attitude toward underlings.

"I love my writers.... I support them and hope that they get everything they're asking for. And I hope it works out soon," Ellen says in a transcript of the telecast cited by Page Six. "In the meantime, [audience members] have traveled across the country. They're here. I want to do everything I can to... give you a show."

A former writer for The Ellen Show, however, in a blog for SurgicalStrikes.com, says, "I'm disappointed in Ellen but not surprised... given what I've seen from her with my own two eyes. We'd watch her in rehearsals, smiling and winning us over with her charm and comedic timing. Then the director would yell cut... and she'd level a glare at the writers."

DeGeneres' rep did not respond to Page Six's request for comment.

Where do you stand on Ellen's decision to have the show go on?

I feel what she is doing is defenseless. I think she is only in it for the money and doesn't give a darn about her writers.

How come it is wrong for Ellen to film when all other day time talk shows are still going on?

I am not taking a side, but where are the attacks on the view, and oprah, and every other talk show still filming?

So much for loyalty. I think a lot less of Ellen after this...

I'm disappointed. It seems like this would only serve to prolong the strike --- a strike that withholds the shows I really love. I would be surprised if she got many actors to go on the show during this time.

I doubt Ellen needs the money. She puts her fans ahead of everything. I am not a fan of hersmyself but I have heard nothing but positive things about Ellen when it comes to her fans. It is not the decision I would personally make but she is doing what she thinks is best.

Obviously I don't know Ellen so I can only speculate, but I don't buy what this supposed former writer has to say.

If Ellen really had a problem with the writing on her show, I can't imagine her not dealing with it in a more proactive way. Who, that is as successful as someone like Ellen, gets things accomplished by glaring? Give me a break.

I don't think Ellen is wrong. I believe she is doing her best to serve her audience. Also, there is a large staff of people who are NOT writers who will lose their paycheck if Ellen shuts down production. She isn't hiring OTHER people to try to write - she is writing her show herself. A person can support striking workers in ways other than actually striking with them.

I believe the writers are justified in striking, but my heart goes out to the thousands of other crew members who will not be working while the strike continues. These people don't make big bucks, so being without work will be difficult for many.

I think that for a celebrity to actually care about her/his fans. VERY COMMENDABLE!!! I have always loved Ellen, I think she is a great comedienne, talk show host, and a wonderful person. Yes yes yes, I TOTALLY agree with her. It's about time that someone in Hollywood showed the high and mighty types that they should remember why they are there in the first place. They already make more than som,e of us EVER will!

If Ellen wants to continue with her show - let her; that's her prerogative. And, good for her. She has voiced that she supports the writers but she also supports her fans and it's her fans that pay to come see her not the writers. I applaud Ellen. Thank you!

I don't get why everyone is so upset with Ellen. The *writers* are on strike. Good for them. If Ellen can temporarily do the show without them, why is that wrong?? She's not on strike. She's not hiring scabs to replace them. She's not interfering with them. So, what is the problem? She does have fans who have made travel arrangements and taken time off work to see the show. And without them, the writers wouldn't have jobs to leave for a strike in the first place!

Same questions about the Desperate Housewives scene. If scripts were already written and they were film those, why are the writers mad about that? Again, the *writers* are striking. Not the actors, not the directors, not the hair and make up people... so if they have episodes already written, why is it a bad thing for them to finish those up? Why do people think that just because they're on strike, they can suddenly become rude and childish????

Ellen is off my list. She is a member of Screen Actor's Guild and as such, is obligated to support the strike - that means not crossing picket lines and not doing her show. The whole point being made to producers is that the show can't go on without the writers. What kind of a message is she sending? A big "you know what" off to the WGA as far as I can tell.

I agree it's the writers that are on strike not Ellen. She should do the show as long as she can without them. It's not fair to people who actually have tickets not to be able to see a show because of a strike....
