A Logan Riff: Where Have Y&R's Epic Stories Gone?
The Young and the Restless courtesy CBS
I'm liking the babe-geezer romance of Sabrina and Victor on The Young and the Restless, but why the snoozy setup? Outta nowhere, Victor has become an avid art collector (Sabrina's his consultant), leading to weeks of pretentious art talk, museum visits, even cameos by real-life artists. This isn't a plot! It's barely a pseudosituation, and the show has way too many of those lately. (Will Karen conquer her stage fright? Who will take an ad in "Restless Style" magazine?) What happened to all the emotionally epic, high-fever stories that made Y&R such a landmark? This soap has somehow lost its opera. — Michael Logan

What happened you say Michael Logan?! Do you even have to ask?!
It's called Kay Alden, Ed Scott, and Jack Smith were shown the door and not invited back to play when Lynn and her family got the hook.
Yes, Y&R isn't what it used to be. It probably never will be again. Sniff. But it IS better than it was a year ago and that's saying alot. Thank you Maria Arena Bell and Josh Griffith.
Btw - Who killed Ji Min? Part of being a good writer is cleaning up the hot messes of the previous regime so how about it people?

Hey Logan call Nancy Curlee and Beg her to return to daytime!! Her sublime storytelling is just what Y&R needs. The greatest actress ever on daytime-the late, great Beverlee McKinsey-sang her praises! Cry if you have to. No one will think less of you. Its for the good of daytime and it's fans.

The epic stories weren't their with Latham either. They are still in the middle of transition fully into the new writers mold so hopefully by the end of summer it can assemble some sort of resemeblence to its former self.

Ed Scott! He made a huge difference in the direction of the show. Days of Our Lives had the good judgement to grab him up!

I have watched Young and The Restless for many years and have really enjoyed it. However, I was hoping for the "older" more mature couple to set some kind of example that this young generation desperately needs to staying together and making family so important. Victor knows what it is like to be an orphan (in the story) and he repeatedly looks for more excitement in his life, always with someone younger and younger. And Nikki, the same. I was distressed when they killed off John Abbott. Get Real again, Please.

I think this column is like 12 months too late. The show has come back big time - the focus is back on the core characters, Victor Jr. is one of the best new characters I've seen on any soap in years and I'm back as a viewer after having tuned out for the first time in 20 years during LML's tenure. I like the direction the show is heading in right now. Keep up the good work.

I can watch Y and R in 12 minutes. It has become just as boring as GL and that's saying a LOT. I yearn for the old days---I can't believe I'm saying this---when Sheila was wreaking havoc!! Throw Paul back with Lauren and cause some tension there. Make Summer Jack's baby. Maybe Alistar IS John. Send Gloria and Jeff to Thailand--permanently. Send Jana, Colleen, and Adrian ANYWHERE! Victoria has become a yawn and Victor and Sabrina--don't even get me started. Adam who? Who cares? The only good part in the last 2 months has been David getting caught up in that poker game and losing. Cane and Lily had a pretty good story going and POOF! that story was gone. Pretty sad!! ABC has the best soaps on television and they get the least nominees for emmies---go figure!

I would love to see a lot of stories cleared up. I liked Paul's girlfriend, the detective, but she's gone. I don't like Coleen or Adrian, Victor's new son is a snooze, his girlfriend is a bore, David Chow needs to go, Brad is painful... a lot of nothing in a small town.

Let's see - In 2007 we had Jana killing people because of a brain tumor, Crystal Springs (need I say more?), the reliquary (once again need I say more?), House of Kim (once again need I say more?), Jack and Nikki waking up one day and both deciding they want to run for office, the convoluted tale of Amber and the $, Nick getting amnesia that he may or may not still have, and a whole bunch of other crap that passed as story.
I like the show better in 2008 thank you very much. It's not must-see but it's worth a watch if it's on.

I have been recording Y&R and GL (I work during the daytime) for the past 20+ years. I stopped recording last month and I don't even miss it. I hate to say it, but I'm losing interest in daytime TV because there isn't anything original or exciting to watch anymore. I'll keep up with the shows online and if something starts happening that interests me, I might start watching again. Or maybe I'll just record one episode of each per week for now. We'll see. Fridays are usually good soap episode days...

The Victor/Sabrina story is pretty dull, but they have to establish distance so that when Victor and Nikki have their inevitable reconciliation, it will seem like a major story. The show does have the feel of a writer's revolving door, with no long-term plot being allowed to develop. But the show was far from perfect before: if we can accept the ridiculously obvious-yet-outrageous idea that Jill is Katherine's daughter (the dumbest thing they've ever done), we can accept a boring few months.

I love the storyline and she should be the one to expose Vic Jr's nefarious plan. He is a slicker and JT ain't on the job doing background on him like he failed with David Chow! Keep up the good work cause no one else at TV Guide can.
