Daytime Emmy Shockers Ahead?
Kelly Moncao by Albert L. Ortega/WireImage.com and Beth Ehlers by Marc Bryan-Brown/WireImage.com
Nominations for the 35th annual Daytime Emmys will be announced live on The View April 30, and I'm expecting some ghastly nods due to an expanded system that has allowed 143 actors on the ballot (a third more than last year).
Never mind that most of 'em shouldn't be permitted anywhere near an Emmy, that's give or take two dozen in each of the acting categories! Several judges tell me they couldn't view that much footage (each actor submits two episodes) and voted without seeing all the work. Some chose not to vote at all.
Plus, there's the usual nonsense: Several lead players, most egregiously All My Children's Alicia Minshew (Kendall), are hogging spots on the supporting list. And some of the best work isn't on the ballot. Where's General Hospital's Kelly Monaco (Sam)? Guiding Light's Beth Ehlers (Harley)? Without them, it's not a fair fight.
And get this — the TV academy has decided to drop the follow-up round of voting after the nominees are announced. The winners will already be known based on this screwy preliminary vote and kept quiet until the award are passed out June 20. What will happen? Let's hope for the best but prepare for the worst. — Michael Logan

Who cares? The Emmys lost their significance years ago and stopped being a reason to stay home on a Friday night to watch them. Last year's show was the worst ever - always a huge mock of the industry and people getting awards that shouldn't. I expect this year not to be any different.

Yeah, unfortunately the Daytime Emmys have become a joke the last couple of years, happening almost parallel to the steep and fast decline of Daytime in general

The Demmys are a DISASTER and have been increasingly irrelevant in the industry for at least the last 18 years. The fact that it took them around a decade to really begin taking The Bold and the Beautiful seriously and almost fifteen years before they even acknowledged Susan Flannery's performance on it is proof enough of that. They lost a TON of credibility with their unabashed bias against NBC starting in the late '90s (and the unbelievable fact that they never ONCE nodded the great Ben Masters, not even in 2001 for his tremendous performance when Ethan's real paternity was revealed). The final straw was that ridiculous year when they had EIGHT Best Actress nominees and Juliet Mills (who'd been snubbed in one or two previous years when she really deserved to be there) was among them for two tapes where she did absolutely nothing. That year blew whatever scant credibility they had left. Oh...and then The View lost AGAIN after Rosie's searing stint when it became one of THE must-see programs of the year. They REALLY are lost.
One of these days, if the industry survives its own cancerous rot long enough, the critics will finally get hip enough to ban together and create their own daytime awards, because the Demmys are so f*cking far behind the times that there's no hope for them anymore.

Brilliant reporting of this story, Michael Logan. I wish I had your job. After all, I have a degree in journalism and cannot find a job in this field anywhere, and I have been out of work for six plus years.
To get to the point of this email--
Without a shadow of a doubt, there will be MAJOR or a BEAUCOUP of SHOCKERS as the Emmy nominations are announced in just under 12 hours to air.
My personal favorites act very well each year and they STILLare not even nominated. One in particular has kept herself out of the pre-nomination race because she has gone as far as saying, and I paraphrase here, "Why should I allow myself in this pre-nomination process? The old way never helped and if my executive producer were to put me in the new pre-nomination process, my chances would still be as close to nil as before as well as an actor can get, so why bother?" That's a bummer because over the years she has done some AMAZING work in my opinion. What she says here is very, very true. She does get overlooked as she is probably one of the few underrated stars out there and that shouldn't be the case at all.
Whenever my lady decides to retire, she will probably get the "Lifetime Achievement Award," and if I was her, I would not accept that at all, especially since I was never nominated by my peers before. Phooey on them.
Anyway, I cannot believe Mr. Logan's reporting about the elimination of the follow-up round of voting. That is just plain dumb. It will never work. I cannot believe that the actual winners of these Emmys has already been decided because of this new procedure as Mr. Logan reports. Maybe the Daytime Emmys should be dissolved permanently.
Oh well, my only other gripe is if the calendar year for these nominations is from January 1 to December 31 of the previous year, then why must we wait four months for the nominations to come out and then another two months for the awards to be presented to the performers. By the middle of June, I will probably have had forgotten what story lines the nominated actors had the previous year. Why can't this academy do what the Oscars have done for the past several years? They were smart to have their respective award's show aired with nominations and winners announced in just under two months into the new year.
The Daytime Emmy nomination process needs some retooling and fast. It is a total disgrace now as it was back then. I will be back within the next 24 hours to vent my feelings on who gets and who doesn't get nominated.
Take care everyone, and I hope, pray, and wish that your personal favorites will be recognized. If not, then release your anger out here as to who your favorites were that got overlooked. There will be MANY. I am betting on many nominations will be repeats of years past, especially within the past, say, five years or less. It's a shame and disgusting.
If anybody cares to share with me their own comments on a more personal level, then please email me at todd670929@msn.com. I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

The Daytime Emmys have ALWAYS shocked and surprised people, sometimes both ways with the same nomination. Just considering hamactor's bizarre belief that Bold and the Beautiful (which has been absolutely stinky since it premiered) and Passions (which was a complete joke from Day 1) ever deserved Emmy nominations is proof that every show and every actor have defenders. I for one can't believe how they keep rewarding Eric Braeden (who is Wooden Acting defined). On the other hand, they've twice awarded the same prize to Christian LeBlanc, and he's terrific.
The sad thing is, the whole art form is dying, and the Daytime Emmys look sadder and more pathetic each year because of it. All of the soaps keep trying more and more strange things to bring in viewers, and the awards just look more irrelevant all the time.

Thanks for the info Michael! I am jazzed for once to watch the nominations because there is an actual chance that my favoritist soap Days Of Our Lives will get nominated for once! Anyone can say whatever about the writing, but the acting is out of this world and its about time the cast gets a few nomintions! I am going home on my lunch break to watch and hopefully I can report some good news for Days fans!

Got to agree with Staley that the belief that any NBC soap deserved an Emmy nomination in the last two decades shows what an absurd task selecting Daytime Emmys has become. Fans believe their every sacred cow deserves a nom even if the actor is playing ridiculous, horribly written drivel. If he or she is pretty enough, then fans can see high caliber acting where really there's just a half-naked hunk or an over-idolized actress.
Most daytime drama (particularly NBC's) has become unfunny farce that insults both its fans and the 'actors' on the shows.
It is true that some performers have turned in intermittently good performances in bad storylines (AMC's Alicia Minshew did turn in a few heartwrenching scenes during the Crash storyline {a storyline that then experienced a steep decline into insulting stupidity}. But, as noted, it takes a huge stretch of the imagination to think she should be in the supporting category). But, by an large, as the soap genre has abandonned quality (heck, even semi-literate!) writing for an absurd string of ever more pointless stunts, they've abandonned any reason for dramatic or writing Emmys to exist. Make it a popularity contest and be done with it.

Heavenlee I not holding out any hope for Days. Even though they have a large vocal fan base of which I am one the always get snubbedat the Emmys. I always felt it was back lash from the Soap Opera Awards which were fan voted and Days swept for years. With the excpetion of a very few people who have the time to watch all 8 shows how can anyone truly pick the best performances. Most people watch 1-4 shows at most so how can anyone really compare all the performances. Everyone is going to have their favorites on the shows they watch but only know about other performances by word of mouth and reputation which is why the same people get nominated year after year. Todd your unnamed actress I am pretty sure is the wonderful Deidre Hall because she mentioned that in article I read here at TVguide.com that I think was in Soap Opera Digest or Weekly. She is one of those actors who with many crazy stories over the years has managed to do great work time and again. She also mentioned it's the fans that matter not what some blue ribbon panel thinks.According to Logan their will be no blue ribbon panel this year.

I think the actress on All My Children are afraid to step on Susan Lucci’s toes/ego hence why they do not submit themselves in the lead actress category when they have a lead story. Remember when Cynthia Watros won for playing Annie Dutton over Kim Zimmer’s Reva? Kim didn’t exactly show sportsmanship. Don’t get me wrong, I love Susan and I was one of fans who would watch every year to see if she would finally win an Emmy, get pissed when she lost and turned off the television. The one year I didn’t watch, she finally won and after that there was no reason to watch the Emmys. The anticipation was gone.

I have loved reading all your comments.
I am glad I am not the only one who doesn't care and thinks the Emmys are a joke.
In recent years it's been too few people who deserved to win (Maura West, Genie Francis, Tom Pelphrey to name a few) who actually deserve it and so many where I think you've got to be kidding me. And don't even get me started on GL and Y&R both getting best show last year.
The whole thing is laughable.
One request - whoever gets the Lifetime Achievement Award this year (Agnes Nixon?! Hello!) can they be invited to the stage to say a few words and not just wave from the audience like it has been the last few times? Just another reason why this awards show is crap.
BlueBelle - I'm sorry you missed when Susan Lucci won. It was electric. I was crying right along with her. Find it on YouTube if you have never seen it. Great television. It gets me everytime when she thanks her husband - "To my husband Helmut Huber who has been with me every step of the way." Sniff. I love when they try to get her off the stage and everyone in the audience like Kelly Ripa is like "NO!". Damn skippy.

GH, Y&R, and GL for best show? The jokes start at the top of the list and are sprinkled throughout although some nominations are warranted. I love that Days got some nominations. I doubt they'll win but it's nice they're on the list. Many omissions as usual but that's to be expected.
Listen up kids - TIVO it, go out that Friday night in June, get online the next morning to see the winners, and then pick and choose the winners you want to see. Don't waste your time watching it live and it is a waste of time.
I will say - Go Ellen!

Did any of these voting people even watch the ABC tapes? Sure doesn't sound like they did. I think the only reason David Canary and Tony Geary made the list was because they've been around and their names were known. What a shoddy screwy way to vote. A big waste of time and money. Let us, the fans, vote for the best. And Rachel Ray has a 'talk show'? I thought it was a cooking show. R&K should have had her spot in the nominations.

nyjoey,
You are correct with the identity of my unnamed actress who deserves to be nominated. You are now 2 for 2--quite impressive. Did you get my email regarding my favorite actors and actresses from each show? Please respond to it. I am interested in to hearing your take on the male actors in this business.
BlueBelle,
I like your comments very much about Kim Zimmer and the year Cynthia Watros won. However, that year, I believe Eileen Davidson deserved to win. She had played 5 different characters. One episode featured all 5 of them. That was impressive.
Anyway, I also read your comments too under the other story regarding the announcements of the nominations and again, I liked what you said, especially about Anthony Geary. This guy is the most egotistical actor out there who gets away with too much on his show. I, too, find it deplorable that he is allowed to take a vacation breaks at the start of each of the four different seasons of the year. He is so overrated, but that executive producer (the infamous Jill Farren Phelps who I loath immensely) is his best friend and she allows it. She treats the men on her show much nicer than the women. Remember, Genie Francis's big beef last year or the year before. To that end, I would like to hear from you BlueBelle in a personal email. My email address is todd670929@msn.com
As for the Emmy nominations this year, I apologize but I cannot criticize because I agree with all of you. I am just as pi$$ed off as you all are. Good riddance!!!
One last note--I hope the only winners this year are those actors/actresses who have never been nominated (better yet, or even won before). There are a few of those, such as Thaao Penghlis from DAYS, (a nomination very much well deserved to a talented actor and a fine gentleman) However, I doubt he will win since he probably did not receive the most votes just to get nominated. And as Michael Logan reported and nyjoey and I commented, there will be no Blue Ribbon Panel this year. Since this is the case, let's just air the Emmys tomorrow night and get this upcoming two-month suspense of waiting over and done with. Why wait?
To that end--most of this year's nominations for last year's work are a big travesty to all mankind and womankind!!!
Good night all!!
