ABC Changes: Murder In, Trees Out

Some head-scratching is in order upon looking at ABC's latest round of midseason shuffling. On one hand, I get why the network would try to give Women’s Murder Club some exposure on a night that isn’t Friday. But in announcing its return with three new episodes on Tuesdays at 10 pm/ET, starting April 29, you can’t help but wonder if the show is being given a favor after all. This scheduling puts it head-to-head against NBC’s powerful Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which you’d think targets much of the same audience. Not only that, but April 29 is the night SVU airs its 200th episode, featuring Robin Williams as a guest villain. (And it has been previously announced that Mariska Hargitay will be getting a steady boyfriend in Bill Pullman, adding even more juice to this already potent franchise.)

Quick check of tea leaves. Yep. SVU is going to murder Club first night out.

The return of Women’s Murder Club shifts Boston Legal to Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET, which means — and don’t act surprised — the charming but underperforming Men in Trees will disappear yet again starting April 30. (A storyline for the April 16 Trees episode has just been issued, so it looks like the show will stay put for now.) Whatever Trees episodes remain will air on Wednesdays starting May 28, conveniently outside of the regular season (such as it is). Boston Legal will no doubt pull a bigger audience than Trees could as it faces classic Law & Order and CSI: NY through most of the May sweeps. It will take a Friday Night Lights-sized miracle for Trees to rebound from this latest setback. I’d say enjoy this sweet little show while you can.

Even if I watched Boston Legal I wouldn't want to lose MiT in favor of it. I DO watch Womens' Murder Club, and I'd still rather watch Men In Trees. It really is hard not to get fed up with network TV lately.

Why on earth can't ABC leave Men in Trees alone?? Take off one of those lovely reality shows or something and put MWC there. There are very few shows I really look forward to and MIT is one of them!!

WHY??????? I really wish that ABC would give us treehuggers some answers as to their shoddy treatment of this show. Who there is making these decisions?? Anyone with a brain??? Obviously they don't really support this show the way they claim they do. If they do, then they're all talk and no action. Get with the program ABC or I'm about to dump yours.

I agree ABC has not nurtured Men in Trees one bit. But it has been given a decent Wednesday time slot against CBS reruns and new episodes of an 18 year old show (Law and Order), and its ratings performance is absolutely horrendous. It is actually surprising ABC hasn't pulled Men in Trees sooner than April 30. As Simon Cowell would say, "Sorry, I'm just being honest."

I find since the writer's strike I've lost all interest in television. I don't blame the writers, but the studios and networks. Between Zucker's completely inappropriate My Name is Earl promo, the reality show nonsense and how the networks have treated some shows - MIT is only the latest victim - I've given up.

Maybe next fall things will be better, but I'm not holding my breath.

Someone at ABC must hate Men in Trees. They have done everything they can to keep it from getting viewers to find it and enjoy it - you cannot get viewers if you keep screewing them around by constantly changing time and place or dropping it for some other stupid show. what everthey put in MIT's place I will not watch - cable tv is looking better all the time.

Say goodbye to Murder Club with the new date and time, there is no way it can compete with SVU. ABC is managing to kill both Murder Club and Men in Trees with one move.

Get rid of all those dumb reality shows. This wasn't given a chance.

Trees could have been a real hit if the network had only left it alone from the start. It's going to have a hard time ever gaining an audience now! I'm so pi$$ed off! X-(

I feel for the Men in Trees viewers. I really do.

Like it has been said, ABC looks to be killing two shows with one stone. And I'd bet it's because both shows are not produced by their in-house studio (may ABC never pick up another show done by 20th Century or Warner Bros. if it's bound to get this same kind of treatment).

Men in Trees was pretty much done, with the terrible demos it's been doing lately, but I think Murder Club maybe had a chance to turn it around with a proper relaunch. But not anymore.

Law & Order: SVU may not be as strong as all that, as the ratings aren't quite as dominant as they once were. I'm not saying Women's Murder Club will beat it, but it may do OK in the timeslot. It'll give me something to watch anyway, since Boston Legal isn't there anymore. I'll still watch CSI:NY on Wednesday, like I would anyway. It's pretty clear ABC doesn't care about Men in Trees anyway. It almost looks like they're toying with the fans of Men in Trees, they way they schedule, then pull it, then reschedule it, then barely promote the reschedule, then pull it again.

ABC has been trying to kill this show for over a year now. I truly hate this network now and will never watch it again if they cancel MIT! There is so much moronic crap on tv these days and MIT is a breath of fresh air. I guess they don't like truly good shows. How could MIT ever get a following with the way it has been bounced around the schedule and rarely promoted? Yet it has millions of devoted fans! This is the final straw for me. I will not watch anything on ABC except for MIT, and when it is cancelled ABC will be forever erased from my channel lineup!

It's really sad that ABC refuses to leave this show in a time slot and let it alone. The problem with repeatedly yanking the program off the air for weeks on end isn't just the fact that no one knows when or where it's airing, but it ruins the narrative flow - I have a hard time remembering what happened (even with the "previously on MIT...")everytime there's a long hiatus. It's ridiculous, and frankly, as much as I like the show, I'm about to throw in the towel. Why invest in something that the network clearly isn't invested in?
