A Whodunit With a Funny Bone

Seeley Booth is a slut.

There, I've said it. And so might you after this week's episode of Fox's Bones (Wednesdays at 8 pm/ET), one of the most enjoyable episodes yet this season on one of TV's more underrated procedurals. There is no justifiable reason why this show isn't doing better on Wednesdays, in one of the most undernourished time periods of the week. (The competition tonight includes three reality shows and CBS's plodding headscratcher Jericho, which follows last week's mega-hyped and well-sampled premiere with a ludicrous second episode in which Skeet Ulrich once again saves the day as ominous rain clouds threatening radioactive fallout loom on the horizon. Not exactly "there's no place like home" material.)

Back to Bones, which most weeks manages the neat trick of delivering a grisly puzzle amid clever character intrigue laced with comedy involving FBI stud Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and the science-geek "squints" led by the formidable Bones (Emily Deschanel). This week, the case is so icky and ooky that Bones herself is a little squeamish. "Even for me, this is disgusting," she says as she surveys the liquefying remnants of this week's mystery corpse, which has been left to stew in a bathtub (a Godiva 3000, we're told) filled with corrosives. "It's only skin," Bones mutters as the congealing brew bubbles and observers try not to barf. It is all so hilariously gross. When young lab rat Zack (Eric Millegan) gushes over a piece of evidence to Booth, the former sniper snipes: "I'd like to go back to the old arrangement where you don't talk to me directly."

Moments like that is why I tune into Bones. Tonight's case is nice and twisty, but the real buzz in the lab is over Booth's apparent reconciliation with his ex-girlfriend (Jessica Capshaw) who's also the mother of his son. Even the usually all-business Bones gets into the gossip. The episode is bookended with scenes of Booth in bed, making what he calls a "huge mistake." You'll probably agree.

But only if you watch. Which I highly recommend.

Thanks, Matt! After struggling through the emotional ups and downs of tonight's Gilmore Girls premiere your Bones review made me laugh out loud and made my night. Bones is the one show that I literally cannot wait to see each week, and this season has been amazing so far. I'm excited about tomorrow's episode and thanks for bring some much-needed attention to the best show that no one is talking about.

You know I like this show, love the banter and the characters. Ok, actually, I only started watching because I missed Angel so badly.

But it really stretches believability in the premise. That a forensic anthropologist would partner with a FBI agent on cases, in the field, with a gun. That she would chase after bad guys and interrogate them, and sometimes shoot them. Or last week, when they get Angela, a forensic artist (and most of what she does is with fictional technology anyway), to question someone because she had a 'human' or 'feminine' touch. Um, don't they have female FBI agents?

Most times, I just do my best to get past the eye-rolling moments to the fun character stuff. And I keep watching while I wait for that fantasy Angel reunion to happen.

Bones is the smartest, sexiest show on TV right now. Emily and David have such a strong chemistry, it's hard to keep your eyes off of them. The talent of the supporting actors is wonderful and the stories are compelling. I, too, cannot understand why Fox isn't pumping more PR into this jewel of a show.

I never saw Angel, but Booth is such a hottie I'll get over that. This show is so good I can't wait for tonight.
I like Justice too, so it's a good night.

Thanks for the warning, Matt; I'll know now when to cover the screen. I started watching Bones last season because I was such a fan of David Boreanaz in Buffy and Angel. I kept watching because it's a first-rate show with interesting characters. I don't sweat the improbabilities; I just enjoy.

Thanks Matt for continuing to plug this very enjoyable and underrated show. I've been a fan of it from day one and knew you appreciated it from your columns. Please keep it up, especially when it moves to Friday nights.

Oh Matt. You crack me up.

Seeley Booth is a slut.

There, I've said it.

You said what we all were thinking, and still managed to give the show a great plug and wonderful review.

I love Bones because it is a great, character driven show. I do not watch other procedurals, no matter how good they may be because they are all about the technology.

I want to see more character driven shows like this, with a good mix of mystery, humour, romance and drama.

Too bad all we are getting right now are more reality shows, because they cost so little to do, and characters are provided for free.

Please keep plugging this show and getting the word out, since Fox does not seem to remember it is on their network.

One of the only shows that I look forward to. I watch a lot, I like a lot, but I love this show. And I don't like who-done-it's normally.

I honestly don't understand why Bones gets so much praise. I tried watching it last year and I couldn't make it through two episodes. It just seemed so cliched. I mean, Booth apparently thinks the notion of solving crimes using science is ludicrous. What decade is he living in? I mean, it reminded me of the dialogue from the Awe-some-O episode of South Park. Maybe the show has improved since last year, but considering people were praising the show since it first premiered, I can't say I have any motivation to sample it again.
