A Salute to Suzanne Pleshette

She was so nice to come home to. In many ways, Suzanne Pleshette’s wonderful (and twice Emmy-nominated) performance as Emily Hartley on CBS’s ’70s classic The Bob Newhart Show was an important evolution of the dream sitcom wife. With her husky voice and dark good looks, Pleshette embodied an elegant, sophisticated, sardonic yet warm soulmate for the endearingly mild-mannered Newhart. If Rob and Laura Petrie (Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore) were TV’s first convincingly sexy modern sitcom couple, despite adhering to ’60s TV conventions dictating they be shown sleeping in separate beds—as if!—Bob and Emily took it a step further. They actually went to bed together. (One terrific episode chronicled a sleepless night as they tried to live up to their policy of not going to bed mad.) This bed, not so coincidentally, took its place in TV history when it was recreated for the finale of Bob Newhart’s second hit sitcom, Newhart—where it was revealed in the final moments that the entire series had been a dream of Bob Hartley.

He’d never not been married to Emily, and seeing Newhart wake up next to Suzanne Pleshette was a sign that all was right again in Sitcom World. This surprise ending was a reward to longtime sitcom fans who had never lost their affection for this professional couple from Chicago.

Speaking of which: Tonight, in a special tribute to the actress who passed away at 70 earlier this month, cable’s boomer-centric AmericanLife TV Network will air a Bob Newhart Show marathon (starts at 9 pm/ET) with a focus on the Emily-Bob relationship, including the memorable episodes where Emily fills in for Carol (Marcia Wallace, now a regular voice on The Simpsons) as receptionist and where Bob learns that Emily’s I.Q. (she’s a teacher) is higher than his. Let the insecurity, and humor, begin, and let our affection for the great Pleshette never be dimmed. She’s one for the ages.

I so agree Matt Emily was one of my first TV crush's. I grew up with the great CBS Saturday night line up
All in the Family
Mash/The Jeffersons
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Bob Newhart Show
Carol Burnett Show.
IMO still the best night of TV ever.
I always loved Suzanne voice and her delivery. When she would guest on the Tonight show with Johhny Carson it was always a great show.
I know it's not polically correct but I always think of her a great "Broad" in the best sense of the word.
I didn't want the 2nd show Newhart much but I did watch the finale and was so surprised and Happy when Bob woke up in bed with Suzanne.

I echo Matt and nyjoey77's comments about Suzanne Pleshette and about the Newhart Show finale. Too bad the networks would never be able to, or perhaps want to, pull off such a surprise these days. It'd be all over the promos.

Matt thanks for the heads up I found out I do get that channel so I taped all the epsiodes that aired eastern time from 9-2 last night. Looking forward to watching them soon and remembering how good TV sit-coms used to be.

A local station in Chicago had a Pleshette tribute over the weekend: Wild Wild West, Route 66 and two Newhart shows. Very nice to see. They also had tributes to Lois Nettleton and Allen Melvin. I doubt you'd see that on TVLand these days.

I've never seen The Bob Newhart show but I did watch newhart growing up. I really enjoyed that show. When I saw the final episode, I was so confused, but after my dad explained it to me, I thought it was the best ending to a tv show ever (and I still do). I need to rent &/or buy both shows.

I actually only really know her from one show, nbc's shortlived show Good Morning Miami and the few episodes she was on 8 Simple Rules after John Ritter died.

The last episode of Newhart is one for the ages. It's still number one on my list of funniest TV moments. She was a great sport for doing it. I'll miss her.

She was also great as Karen's mother on "Will & Grace' - the contrast alone between their two voices was so funny!

Enjoy your reunion with Tom Poston, Suzanne!

Not only was Suzanne Pleshette artistically talented, she was also drop-dead gorgeous. Why couldn't you have shown a close-up of that truly beautiful face. I really like Bob Newhart, but in a tribute to Suzanne, you could have left his face out and I bet he wouldn't have minded.
