The New Season: Pushing Daisies and More
Lee Pace and Anna Friel in Pushing Daisies by Scott Garfield/ABC
Will the TV audience go out on a limb to embrace the much-buzzed-about pilot of ABC's delightfully one-of-a-kind Pushing Daisies, or will this one go the way of the whimsical and short-lived Wonderfalls (another offbeat gem from creator Bryan Fuller)? Will ABC's Private Practice and NBC's Bionic Woman continue to duke it out for bragging rights as the season's sole breakout hits? Or is it possible that having sampled the first episodes of each out of curiosity, disgruntled viewers will find something else to occupy their time? Is CW's over-the-top Gossip Girl destined to be a cult guilty pleasure at best? Can Casey become the first female Top Chef (here's hoping) when the winner is announced in the live finale? Will Cartman make us blush as he pretends to have Tourette's syndrome on the season-opener of South Park? (You’ve noticed I've turned away from network TV in addressing the 10 pm/ET hour. Only ABC's Dirty Sexy Money piques my interest from the big-three offerings in that hour.)
These are among the questions looming large as we enter the second Wednesday night of the official TV season, and the first Wednesday with all of the networks' lineups finally intact. Not only am I dying to see how it all plays out, I'm actually excited to watch most of these new episodes.
And to answer my own first question: Comparing Pushing Daisies’ situation to that of Wonderfalls isn’t entirely germane. ABC is giving one of its largest promotional pushes of the fall season to this colorful, wacky and magically endearing series about life, death and improbable love. Whereas back in the spring of 2004, Fox treated Wonderfalls like something of a leper, burying it in a Friday graveyard slot and casting it out after a mere four episodes. (Thankfully, the entire 13-episode series was preserved on DVD.) Daisies is almost certainly going to get some time to grow. And who knows? We’re overdue another miracle like Lost, a show that defied the rules and, by offering something wondrously different, attracted a large and enchanted audience right from the start. I’m not counting on it, but stranger things have happened.

I'm so scared Pushing Daisies won't get the audience it deserves... it really is a wonderful, one-of-a-kind show!
And Dirty Sexy Money, is fanfrackingtastic!
8pm: Pushing Daisies 9pm: Gossip Girl 10pm: Dirty Sexy Money
That's a good night of guilty pleasure TV

Daisies will get a huge tune in because it's the most hyped show of the season.
Whether it can live up to that build-up remains to be seen.

I second that!! I'm also hoping that GG gets some of the audience back that it lost last week (I'm hoping alot of those were watching Bionic Woman and Private Practice and didn't care for them and will return to GG). I'm so excited for tonight ... I can't wait!

My husband and I watched the first 5 minutes of Pushing Daisies last night and it will be the last 5 minutes. The show looked ridiculous, we definitely won't be tuning in. Hopefully it will get canned.
Sorry for those looking forward to it!

I watched the Pushing Daises pilot a few weeks ago. I'm still not sure what to make of it and I still don't know if I liked it. Early on I was thinking it sucked just like sheilab1229 said, but by the time it was over I was leaning more toward liking it, but I'm still undecided. Being on the fence, I'll give it a few more chances.
It's definitely unique and unlike anything I've seen on TV in recent memory. I definitely wouldn't compare it to Lost because they're very different and I think they will draw different audiences. The chemistry between Lee Pace and Anna Friel was very good. However, the constant and seemingly never-ending narration quickly became very annoying and it never let up. On a side note, Chuck for a girls name? Even as a nickname? Really?

I'm looking forward to "Pushing Daisies," but I wish ABC had spent half as much time promoting "Dirty Sexy Money." That show almost slipped in under the radar, but everyone I've talked to who has seen it really liked it a lot.
For me, tonight, it's "Pushing Daisies," "Bionic Woman" and "Dirty Sexy Money."

PD premiered in Toronto last night - it is wonderfully delightful!! It's fresh, different, funny and the cast has great chemistry. Definitely a must see for me. The voice over lends a fairytale element... it was cute at first to count by years, weeks and days but that is the only thing that could become tiresome, IMO. Snappy dialogue and good setup... looking forward to next week. Can only hope Canadian viewership counts in those oh so important ratings!

I sent you a question for ask matt and you kinda answered part of it with that last paragraph. I didn't think that fox promoted wonderfalls much, but couldn't remember. I think I do remember it moving around a little bit and getting pre-empted once or twice, which is bad when they only shows 4 episodes. I watched every single one and loved the show more every time. I still love it and watch my dvds often.
Are there any similarities between the 2 shows besides Brian Fuller and Lee Pace?

Dirty Sexy Money is the best new show I've seen this year. I watched the first episode twice and I never do that! If you missed it, go buy it on iTunes or whatever. It's worth $2 seeing that first one.

Like it's been said before, this show is a fairy tale first and a dramedy second. I don't want to generalize the audience too much, evryone has their own taste, but this is a show for those who with a great imagination.

8pm-I'll try Pushing Daisies 9pm-I made the mistake of watching Bionic Woman last week so I'll catch up on some magazines. Zero interest in Gossip Girl and Private Practice. 10pm-Watch Dirty Sexy Money and tape South Park/Sarah Silverman.

Wow...5 whole minutes sheila? Nice to see there are no snap judgments from you...heh. I've avoided PD online because I wanted to watch with the rest of the country and make up my mind then.
9pm - I'll give Bionic Woman another shot or two...(although I don't know how MR can overcome the scene stealing Katee). I had thought about DVRing Private Practice...but Grey's is enough medical shenanigans for me.
10pm - DSM, baby! Nice surprise last week... a show that actually FUN to watch. I also didn't expect to like Life...so that's the DVR slot.
Anxious for ratings tomorrow! Not so much for PD...I think it'll do well...its next week that will be interesting. However...I'm dying to know if all the great word of mouth will help DSM. Hope so!
