As the Globes Slowly Spins
I sure hope you didn’t skip 24’s literally explosive Night 2—seriously (as Shonda Rhimes would say), how dark is this new season already?—for the Golden Globes Monday night. All the flowing wine seemed to have loosened and thickened nearly everyone’s tongue, resulting in long speeches that combined with a sluggish pace and an epic number of ads to push the show beyond the 11 pm/ET cutoff time. (You know an awards show is badly time-managed when the seriously big winners are forced to hurry through their speeches.)
Anyway, to have had a good time, it looks like you really did have to be there this year. And partake of the bubbly.
Imagine the collective yawns and groans across the land when that international bummer Babel (this year’s overly contrived Crash) took home the best drama trophy, handed out by Arnold Schwarzenegger on crutches that could have been a symbol for the whole wobbly though star-studded evening.
But enough about movies, with this exception. I would expect these four acting winners to repeat at the Oscars: the majestic Helen Mirren for The Queen, Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland (a movie I haven’t seen, but he rocks and roars in the trailers, and the competition is pretty negligible this year), and that dynamic Dreamgirls duo of Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy.
Most memorable moments of the show: clever, charismatic speeches by Globes faves Meryl Streep and Hugh Laurie (love him, but rewarding Michael C. Hall’s Dexter would have been so much more satisfying); Tom Hanks’ rollicking salute to Cecil B. DeMille honoree Warren Beatty, with the mantra “What balls this man has!”—in this case, “balls” referring to “artistic vision and fortitude”; Sacha Baron Cohen picking up that theme in his hilarious acceptance, which recounted one of the more graphic parts of his Borat movie; and the emotional high point being America Ferrera’s win for Ugly Betty, which had much of the ballroom wiping away tears.
As for the TV winners, it was a mostly satisfying mix, tending to uphold the Globes’ reputation for welcoming new shows and fresh faces (Ugly Betty, Ferrera), cheering on deserving underdogs (the brilliant Alec Baldwin from 30 Rock) and acknowledging buzz shows (yay, Grey’s Anatomy!) that often aren’t taken seriously enough by moldy institutions like the Emmys.
I was happy for Kyra Sedgwick’s win for The Closer (she should have won last year), and couldn’t have been more pleased for Helen Mirren’s double-fisted royal triumph on the big and small screen. The Globes do love their British actors on TV, though, considering the wins of Emily Blunt and Jeremy Irons in those ridiculous supporting categories (lumping together actors from TV movies, miniseries, episodic comedies and dramas) and Bill Nighy of BBC America’s Gideon’s Daughter over Robert Duvall in AMC’s marvelous Broken Trail. (I love Nighy in just about everything, including this little gem of an import, but still.)
The Golden Globes don’t actually mean much in the larger TV picture. They’re a much bigger deal to those handicapping the Oscars this time of year. But if a win can help boost the profile of shows like Ugly Betty and 30 Rock, and help convince skeptics that Grey’s Anatomy isn’t just popular but pretty freaking awesome entertainment, then maybe it wasn’t such a waste of time after all.
But honestly, people. You should have been watching 24.

Did you notice that they forgot to show the clip and mini synopsis of Little Children? It was one of my favorite films of the year and it's as if they either forgot or just didn't bother since they were running out of time. It's a shame, because that is an incredibly small film that needed some exposure, and the clip might have helped to get more people see the movie. In fact, it was one of the first great movies of the year that Meryl Streep recited in her acceptance speech.

I watched 24 and was amazed at the ending of hour 4! OMG!
I taped the Globes and fast-forwarded through stuff I wasn't interested in. I am satisfied that Hugh Laurie won, and not Michael C. Hall. Laurie is the best actor on tv, so he should win.
Besides Laurie, I was most satisfied that Ugly Betty and America Ferrera won. That has become my favorite show, and Ferrera gives it the right touch of heart and strength.
As for Grey's Anatomy, I think the show is a good soap, but not really a great drama. So I wasn't thrilled that it won.

While I feel that Ugly Betty is deserving as the "Best New Comedy" I don't believe it is the BEST comedy on television. That honor should have gone to The Office. I don't want to sound like a sore loser, but how anyone can vote against The Office's which this year alone brought us the classic episodes like "A Benihana Christmas",and "Casino Night" is beyond me.

Of Course I watched "24", was there something else on? These first 4 hours have been crazy!
I don't EVER watch award shows cause they usually suck, seriously! At 11:30 pm I turned on E Entertainment and watched the winners scroll across my screen, shut the power off and went to bed. See, I got the run-down without all the boring speeches!
Hurray Ugly Betty and bummer Michael C. Hall!

Watched 24 (had the same reaction as last year: first four hours told a story that reached a conclusion, and I am curiously uncurious about what happens next, so recaps until May), taped the Globes. So much better to fast-forward through such programs. I'm glad Prince was MIA, only for Timberlake's joke. And I understand support for Michael C. Hall, but I tend to root for the people who will give the most entertaining acceptance speeches....

I was thrilled that Hugh Laurie won again. He is the most talented actor currently on TV, so truly the best man won!! As far as Grey's Anatomy goes, I can't stand it. It belongs in a soap opera time slot, and not in the night-time drama time slot!

There was something on other than 24? I agree with a poster above - award shows are dreadful. I can just get the winners from TVGuide.com!

To the previous poster - there's a special Golden Globes section linked from the homepage with all the winners.
Michael C. Hall was ROBBED! All these people raving about Hugh Laurie cannot have seen Dexter! He's freaking brilliant. Laurie's good on House, but Hall blows him out of the water. Oh well, I'm sure he'll get another shot at the Emmys.
As happy as I am for America Ferrera, I sort of agree with the poster who took issue with Ugly Betty's win. Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but The Office and Weeds are infinitely more satisfying to me.
And put me in the "go Grey's!" camp (although this whole Isiah Washington thing is REALLY getting old). And, of course, Alec Baldwin. I'm hoping this gives NBC reason to keep believing in the show despite the low ratings.

Hugh Laurie's speech- entertaining, as always, loved it (along w/ Meryl's)! Yet, I have to ask- did the judges (is that what they're called) actually watch an episode of 30 Rock, or did they just see Baldwin's name and give it to him- the show is lousy and as talented as Baldwin is, he didn't deserve it.
As for the other winners- I think it was a good mix, and some of them contradicted my predictions.
Yes- this show did bite this year, why?--maybe it was the odd speech by Borat, the random presenters of Justin Timberlake (he did one or two movies and now he's an "actor"?) and Dane Cook...can we say trying too hard?
