CW Update: After the Upfront

Ray Wise and Bret Harrison in Reaper by Michael Courtney/The CW
A few thoughts after sitting through an L.A. satellite feed of CW’s Upfront presentation on Thursday, which was more impressive (the Pussycat Dolls performance aside) than I expected.

The Reaper looks much funnier than I expected. Should have guessed given that the appealing lead, Bret Harrison as a schmo who learns his parents sold his soul to the devil, is best known for sitcom work (Grounded for Life, That ’70s Show, The Loop). Ray Wise is a scream as his demanding new boss, aka Lucifer. Only drawback: Reaper’s time-slot competition includes another largely comedic series about a reluctant nerdish hero, NBC’s Chuck. Is there room for two?

Also getting a good response: Aliens in America, with its Muslim exchange student fish-out-of-water befriending his classmate/host, a nerdy social pariah. This looks perfectly suited as a companion piece to the similarly sardonic Everybody Hates Chris.

Gossip Girl may well become a brand-appropriate hit, but I’m personally weary of shows about overprivileged “teenagers” who look and act like they’re in their 30s, and the whole gossip-via-Blackberry/Sidekick gimmick makes them come off as an even more self-absorbed and unlikable tribe than usual. (I was amused when CW confirmed that when One Tree Hill returns, it will have jumped forward in time four years to post-college graduation. For once, this cast will finally be able to act its age.)

Hmm - after reading that, I'm more amused about "One-Tree Hill" returning with a pitch much like "Veronica Mars" planned (flash forward in time by years).

At least the CW was finally "upfront" with their plans for "Veronica Mars". Don't get me wrong, I'm glad someone gets to keep "their show", but I think the CW could have at least bought me dinner.

Of course, I'd get a WTF?! Special with a side of Bitterness - care to share a plate, Matt? (Yes, I know how much you cringe at these types of complainers, so, no, I didn't think you would, either...)

Yay, Bret Harrison's back!

"One Tree Hill" is still on the air? Feh.

Yes, I know many people hate One Tree Hill, but let's be clear about something: The creator of One Tree Hill came up with the Fast Forward idea prior to Veronica Mars. I read about OTH at least 1 month before VM. Don't get me wrong, I would have liked to see it work out for VM, but it was really VM that took the idea from OTH.

One Tree Hill's "jump ahead" twist was announced about a year before there was any talk about Veronica Mars FBI. I read about it last TV season when the show won Kristin Veitch's Save One Show poll.

Don't get me wrong, I love Veronica Mars and prefer it over OTH. But if any show "copied" the other one, it'd be VM copying OTH's idea.

Yeah, I was about to say the same thing but you guys already beat me to it. The OTH 4-year jump in time was planned way ahead of time. I don't even watch the show and I knew about this since last year because the creator said this is what he was planning to do. I think it's a smart idea (the only time I will ever use that word to describe OTH) since high school shows always seem to go downhill when the characters go to college. Despite the fact that it's much better than high school in real life, it just doesn't translate well on television. I wasn't that crazy about Undeclared and Season 4 of Buffy (even with Hush) is still my least favorite season of the show.

Thanks for the review/preview of the CW shows. I think I will check out the Reaper now and I am looking forward to Aliens in America, it will be nice to see a Muslim portrayed in a three-dimensional light on TV and not in relation to terrorism.

this is going to sound lame- but i love the gossip girl series (of books). That said, making it to tv- that's going to suck- BIG time. Many of the things are in the nuances of the literature, you cannot get that across in television. Plus, they added a few characters that were never mentioned in the books (ahem- when did we ever see Serena's father? And Nate's father with the exception of a scene or two in the seven books I have read). This is awful, but I'm looking foward to The Reaper- I loved Bret in Grounded, so I'm hoping he'll do well (with the show and the ratings) next fall.

I totally agree. What a refreshing change from 24's portrayal...

Matt didn't mention anything about Life Is Wild. Personally, I think it does not look appealing at all.

Even though I'm young at heart, I think I'm too old for Gossip Girl ! From what little I've seen, I don't think it will work for me.

I'm much more interested in Reaper. I've always liked Bret Harrison and Ray Wise as Lucifer, please !

I'll also check out the pilot for Aliens in America.

The only CW show I'll totally pass on is Life is Wild.
