CSI's Sara Sidles Off into the Sunset

Jorja Fox in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation by Ron P. Jaffe/CBS
On last week’s episode of CSI, in the crossover stunt featuring Without a Trace’s Jack Malone, Sara Sidle was shown as visibly shaken at an especially unsettling crime scene, walking away as if she’d had enough. Her psychological unease and emotional exhaustion had been well established even before last season’s cliff-hanger that left her trapped under a car in the desert, as fans wondered all summer if TV’s top procedural was going to kill off one of its own. Thankfully, CSI (as usual) took the high road, and this story reaches its destination tonight.

Unless you’ve been in solitary the last few months, you know that tonight’s heavily promoted (and for once, worth the hype) episode marks Sara Sidle’s, and Jorja Fox’s, departure from the series. Without going into the specifics (which would be wrong), let me just say this is a terrific farewell: melancholy, creepy and, most important, providing a dignified exit for an important character who will always be welcomed back into the fold — and not just by her mentor-turned-lover Gil Grissom (William Petersen, who’s also excellent in this moody episode).

Jorja Fox has always made it clear in her portrayal of Sara that this crime-scene tech is unusually susceptible to taking cases personally, to letting them get under her skin. That’s certainly true in this episode, which resurrects a particularly troubling case from a previous season, involving a manipulative child genius (well and disturbingly played by Juliette Goglia) who knows just how to push Sara’s buttons.

"You look different than you used to be: angry and a little said," scary little Hannah tells Sara in one of their encounters.

Smart girl. Poor Sara. Nicely done, CSI.

I'm so glad that they're giving my favorite actress and her character a good send off. Jorja Fox is an incredible actress and Sara Sidle is one of the greatest female characters on TV, I'll miss them both!

I'm so glad that Sara (Sui) Sidle is finally leaving this show. I do not blame Jorga Fox for the relentlessly whiny character she portrays, but I am glad that she is leaving.

Thanks Matt for a good review. I can't believe the hatred spewed towards Jorja in some of the reviews. It's like they are not even reviewing the episode but reviewing the actress.

And since I won't be watching CSI without her and CSI is the only reason I come to this forum I can finally say what I've wanted to say for so long. Ranger99 please do us all a favor and shove your suicidal Sara bullcrap talk up the furthest part of your anatomy and go jump off a cliff. You've been nothing but consistently nasty to Jorja Fox so don't try to say you don't blame JF now for her portrayal of Sara because no one is buying it. So long you miserable waste of life.

I hope the episode lives up to the hype, and I hope Sara returns.

WOW! I thought that I voiced my opinion with class and discretion. I don't think that I have ever offended anyone to that degree with under 50 words.

I agree with sonnet53, Ranger99 has been so nasty to Jorja Fox all along and now she says she doesn't blame Jorja for... I'm not even going to repeat the words.
Although "waste of life" may not have been the most politically correct thing to say... it's kinda understandable considering all the things Ranger has said about Jorja.
Sara may be leaving, but at least she didn't die in the premiere, she doesn't die tonight and we all had to see that "ugly" actress for 7 more episodes. AND... there's the possibility that she'll be back.
And one more thing... KISS!!!

It must be difficult for an actor to portray a troubled character over a long term. Jorja Fox has done a great job portraying Sara. I'm glad to hear they got this episode right. Thank you for understanding the importance of this character to so many of us.

I've been a loyal viewer of CSI for nearly 8 years. But it stops after this episode! I'm disgusted that the writers would write the character of Sara out of the show this way. It wasn't necessary and I dont know what their stupid point was to have her live thru Dead Doll if only she was to leave now and break her lovers heart.
I'm disappointed, disillusioned and my respect for the CSI writers goes when Jorja Fox does.
The fans deserved better than this.
ANGST in any show can go so far before it becomes too much- CSI will lose a lot of viewers over this stupid stunt.

oh please Ranger, stop acting all innocent. Everyone on this forum knows what you are all about - spreading the hate. We are not 'sensitive' you are 'insensitive' Seriously. And you know there is a certain amount of respect that even foes show eachother. You don't kick people when they are down and hurting which is what you did by coming here ONCE again with your suicidal line when she's leaving the show tonight. You have no tact or class whatsoever and I'm glad I won't have to read your crap going forward

I would like to offer my apologies to anyone I offended with my low-brow comments about Sara Siddle. Clearly I did not understand how beloved she is by fans of the show.

I'm really really glad Sara will finally Not be a part of CSI anymore. Though I was never a Jorja Fox fan, I have nothing against her personally, but the character always annoyed the hell out of me and her relationship with Grissom is very creepy to me not because of the age difference, but because he always seemed to me like a father figure to her more than anything. I was looking forward to this episode pretty much ever since she first appeared on CSI (was it ep #1.02 or #1.03? I can't remember now), but now that I know it's with that creepy little girl I *know* it will be awesome! The first one with her has to be one of the best episodes EVER!
