X-Files 2: Five Questions for Chris Carter
X-Files: I Want To Believe by Diyah Pera/20th Century Fox
TVGuide.com: Fans have really been waiting for this movie, X-Files: I Want to Believe (in theaters July 25). Are you surprised that they’re still interested? Chris Carter: Yes. I think the reason we made the movie was because we felt that enthusiasm from the fan base. That being said, I think for this movie to be as successful as Fox would like, we needed to make it a movie that would appeal beyond our fan base, to a broader base, and even to a group of people who didn't watch The X-Files before. I would talk with college juniors, sophomores, freshmen — they were too young to see the show when it was on the air. It started 15 years ago. So, yeah, we thought about them when we came up with the story.
TVGuide.com: So can we expect a romantic relationship between Mulder and Scully? Carter: I’m not divulging the nature of their relationship. Let me just say that it's honest to where we felt they'd be six years after we last saw them.
TVGuide.com: And how about the Lone Gunmen or Skinner — are they in the movie? Carter: [Cryptically] You will see someone from the series who is not Mulder and Scully. [Pauses] Someone or someones.
TVGuide.com: With the tendency to seek and post spoilers online, was it especially difficult to keep the movie's story lines under wraps? Carter: Yes, there are so many ways a story can leak out, and the Internet has created a competitive environment for people with information. You get a lot of attention for having information. If you're Harry Knowles, you can make a living off of it. There were paparazzi and people looking to capitalize on their proximity or access to our locations. There were call sheets that were intercepted. But knowing we'd run into things like this, we sometimes used counteroffensives, and we’re not above — or below — the use of propaganda.
TVGuide.com: Could you imagine doing a new X-Files movie every couple of years or so? Carter: That seems like a natural to me, but this movie has to be successful for there to be another one. I think every time you go out you need to get a home run. [Laughs] I don't think a double here will do it. — Matt Cabral

I just saw a trailer for this on TV yesterday, yesterday! I still have yet to see a trailer for this in front of any movie I have seen lately. My point is where is the promotion for this movie?
Yes, I understand it is supposed to be mysterious, but this is just stupid.
This movie would have been PERFECT for a viral campaign ala The Dark Knight.

I haven't looked forward to a movie this much in a long time. With Chris Carter's well deserved reputation for smart writing and the star's talented performances not only in the X-Files but in everything they've done since, it's sure to be a treat. XFilesNews.com is a great source for news and clips...

I wasn't an X-Files fan when I was growing up. I am a sophomore in college, so I am one of those people that Carter mentioned was too young when the show began.
However, the trailer gained my interest. So I have been DVRing reruns on TNT and Sci Fi so I know as much as possilbe before it comes out. While fast forwarding through the commercials I have noticed promos for the movie. Basically, FOX is trying to sell the movie to people who are alreay likely to see the movie?
My brother (who was a big X-files fan) didn't even know about the movie until I told him. Both he and I havn't seen any spots on any other programs. I think the season finales of Lost or House would have been a good place to start. Seriously, I almost think that FOX doesn't want this to be a success.

Does the Movie News Team not realize that the Lone Gunmen are dead? Not "Presumed Dead" like Krycek always was, but actually dead. We saw it! Crack research staff.

I actually asked about the lack of ads at the LA Film Fest and they said by 7/25 everyone will know about the movie. To be fair, I've now just started to see a TON of ads. There have been ads during repeats of WaT, during America's Got Talent, and on ESPN. Plus the trailer airs at least before Wanted (and I'm sure other movies, haven't gotten out very much lately). Hopefully there will be more ads so the movie gets the opening weekend it needs to ensure another sequel!

I had read originally that this film was supposed to be a stand-alone film, not one that got bogged down in the boring UFO arc...the preview seems to make that a lie...
Sad, if it's true. It was the individual episodes that made the X-Files a great show. The arc was boring, repetitive and dull.

I disagree. This does not look like part of the mythology. I have no idea what is going on in the movie from the trailer and that has me nervous.

I haven't seen a trailer yet - granted, I don't watch much tv, but what little I do watch on SciFi and BBCA should be dripping with promos. Geez, they started running ads for Wall-E and Hancock, what, in January?
X-"Philes" know about this movie, and if they are just counting on the fanbase, they don't even need to advertise. BUT, if they are trying to get a bigger audience they have to reach out to them and just slam 'em with ads. Yes, non-believers, we want you, too!

OSUBuckly - Chris Carter has been asked about the Lone Gunman many times and has said, "No one is ever really dead on the X-Files." Yes, TLG are dead but they still appeared as ghosts (really Mulder's conscience) in the show's final episode. So the question is a valid one!
To others - This is a stand alone horror story. No black oil or aliens. We've been covering this movie for months, but Fox is more stingy with commercials because Carter really wants this movie to be a spoiler-free fright fest.
I'm praying it's good. And yes, our friends at xfilesnews.com are an excellent source of movie updates.

Looking forward to this movie. Saw the presentation with Chris, Gillian and David at Wondercon in March and not only does the movie look good but they look great in person too. Hope the movie makes millions so they make more movies.
