What Happened to Kristen Bell's Fanboys?

To cancer or not to cancer? That's the question that has prompted the Weinstein Co. to release two versions of Fanboys on DVD, and to explore the option of a theatrical release for the much-delayed film. A vocal bunch of Star Wars fan supporters, however, are threatening to boycott the studio if Fanboys isn't released to theaters exactly (and only) the way the filmmakers intended.

Fanboys was conceived as a road-trip dramedy about four friends — including one who has cancer — who break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch on the eve of the release of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. (Think Stand by Me, but with Wookiees and light-sabers.)

Weinstein spokespeople have claimed that the cancer storyline confused the tone of the movie, which it envisioned as more of a straight comedy — in particular because of the recent successes of the film's then-lesser-known cast members Kristen Bell, Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel. So they ordered reshoots that excised the cancer story entirely, and then tested both versions.

The cancer-free cut won by a slim margin, leading Weinstein to consider the dual-version release plan. Mark down another victory for freedom of expression — oh, and capitalism.

I have to admit, when I heard the pitch for this film, I thought, "Excellent." But interestingly, I didn't know about the cancer subplot. What do you think? Is it better to go for the straight funny, or is laughter through tears your favorite emotion, too? — Mickey O'Connor

From what I'd read, the cancer was basically the reason for the road trip and effort to break into Skywalker Ranch.

As motivations go, that's got to be a lot better than whatever replaced it in the cancer-free version.

Frankly, anything less than the original version won't be what intrigued me and had me wanting to see the movie when it's released.

If the cancer goes, I'm not going. Simple as that.

I agree. The movie is not the studios vision, they didn't come up with the idea so they should butt out. I've really been looking forward to this movie and want to see what the director/writers wanted from it.

I had no clue that anyone had cancer in the movie and I would see it either way. Who really cares what the motivation is, a "Fanboy" or girl will do whatever to get close to their cult lord.

Why is movie news now on a separate page? I liked things a lot better when all of the day's entertainment news was in one easy to find location.

So wait is this going stirght to DVD or is it still going to have a theater release. If they do a theater release which version are we getting. But according to Kristen the retakes they keep shooting help the movie move along. But then again it is never a good sign if they are always needing to do reshoots.

Well obviously when they read the script and decided to make the movie, they decided to do it with the cancer story there. If it was good enough to get a green light, why change it? Especially if the cancer free didn't test that much higher. If they want to give you a choice, they should release ONE disc and put the reshoots on as bonus material.

I wish they'd hurry and release this movie. I really want to see it.

I'm so appalled they would even consider airing the film with the cancer storyline excised. Censorship in the name of capitalism...the Apocalypse must be imminent.

I am so tired of studios and test audiences intervening to ruin a film so that more bucks will be added to the till.
Release it the way it was intended...with the Cancer storyline and release both versions on DVD!!

The idea of the cancer subplot lends heart and soul to the idea behind what these friends are trying to do. Take that away and you have a movie that simply mocks Star Wars fandom at the expense of those most interested in seeing Fanboys in the first place.

I don't understand how the Weinstein Co. doesn't understand that the people that end up seeing this movie are going to be Star Wars fans. It has nothing to do with who is in the movie so why change stuff to make it more commercially viable?

What'll come first?
"Fanboys" in Theaters
or "Spaceball-The Animated Series" on G4

I REALLY hope that the studio doesn’t take the heart out of this movie. I was looking forward to seeing this because I’m a fangirl who loves Star Wars, Kristen Bell, and Chris Marquette but if the studio is going to just step in and fix what isn’t broken because they figure the audience would rather see a dumb comedy instead, then I have little interest in watching it. Taking the depth out of the film is an insult to the audience; I hope they don’t do so.

People kill people......
Suits kill creativity (every time!):_|Was the test audience a random sample of the general public or the target audience???????

Not true. I plan on seeing it for Kristen Bell.
