Box Office: Speed Stalls Short of Expectations

As predicted by many here in the Movie News blog, Iron Man repeated as box office champ, adding $50.5 million to its blockbuster haul. That was plenty to leave Speed Racer at the starting line. The Wachowskis' hyperkinetic pic opened with $20.2 million, and was almost also bested by What Happens in Vegas (which did $20 mil in its first weekend). "[Speed Racer] didn't perform to our expectations," a Warner Bros. rep tells the AP, and is unlikely to recoup its $120 mil budget.

Rounding out the weekend's top five were Made of Honor ($7.6 million) and Baby Mama ($5.8 mil).

Um, most people only go and see one movie per week. The people who went to see Iron Man and Vegas this weekend basically fall into the same group as people who would go see Speed Racer.

They should have waited a few weeks to release this movie. Don't they know more people would see Iron Man and take away a ton of their viewers?!?

I totally agree, pyeman9. They should never have been released so closely.

I also think the comparison of the two is unfair. They are totally unique films in their own right. They are both worth seeing and are both great films.

I personally preferred Ironman, but in my household of four, the other three liked Speed Racer the best!

I think the only surprise of the week is that Vegas movie made $20 million? I just can't imagine who thought that movie looked entertaining enough to even watch the trailer?

I really think Speed Racer will do well in DVD rentals and sales. I was surprised to hear that the budget was $200 million. I just NEVER thought there was that big of a following for Speed Racer. I thought it was kind of a cult type thing.

Iron Man was awesome. I liked Speed Racer, too. I am disappointed at how poorly it did, but when going up against Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kucher, what do you expect?

This is so 1 of those times when you
would be making a BIG MISTAKE by not
getting U and YOUR KIDS TO see an
awesum eyepopping fun race cartoon sort
of come to L I V E!
Whats not to LIKE or LOVE? THIS Is a
fun colorful almost 3d movie of a COOL
cartoon style show! IT was a fun time
for me all three of my sons & grandma to
see & we FULLY ENJOYED this ride
TOGETHER!!! GO SPEED RACER GO.....

NOT DISSAPPOINTING AT ALL!

Gather your thoughts before you post please, scarletangeluss. One rambling, incoherent, all caps post is more than plenty.

You might want to look into spell check too if you want anyone to remotely take you seriously.

Your judgmental tirade against two well respected, extremely talented, though human, actors only accentuates your own short comings.

We all get that you prefer a movie that more closely resembles an LSD trip. We get it and we understand.

movie isnt as good to see as Ironman?
IF YOU LOVED YOUR HOTWHEELS YOUR GONNA
LOVE THIS MOVIE IT'S LIKE BEING SUCKED
INTO A HOTWHEELS GAME AT TIMES... ITS
COLORFUL 3D-ish at times & real fun for
all the little gearheads out there as
well....GRANDMA had such a good time
seeing how excited the 3 boys were watching this movie that she wants to
take them to see it again!!!
