Sex Director Speaks on Rumored Death in the City

With the Sex and the City movie nearing its release day, rumors have been flying about whether there will be a death in the city — and in particular, the death of Mr. Big (Chris Noth).

Director Michael Patrick King, however, laid that buzz to rest, more or less. "Kill Mr. Big? I would have been chased around the planet by women with torches," he joked to the AP. Yet, King did confide that he was looking to infuse some layers of melodrama into this film adaptation of the show — but perhaps not as much as a darker drama would call for.

"My ultimate target," King said, "was to make our 'girlfriends' — in other words, our audience — happy. And I don't think Mr. Big dying would make them happy."

When pressed on the possibility of potential other deaths (Carrie gets hit by a cab after tripping in her Chloe gladiators? Charlotte suffocates in the steam room?), however, King denied the possibility. "It's a summer movie," he said. "Why would I want to kill anyone?" Do you buy King's denials? — Anna Dimond

Sounds to me like their plan to stir up a little buzz backfired. I know alot of SATC fans - myself included - who had decided to skip the movie b/c it was starting to sound like such a downer.

THe previews show Carrie sadly leaving the wedding scene in a limo. I assumed a BIG death. If it is just introspection, the preview is making it look differently to me.

gee i dont know , i just dont know, i really dont know why but i'm skeptical about the whole thing...i'm just getting bad vibes about the movie, i like the way sex&the city ended event though learning big's name was plain old john....i like to think that carrie& big sailed away in the new york sunset with her manolos in his limo...
i dont want anything to spoil that!!
and i also like that samantha stayed with her actor boytoy...
so yeah i'm weary i'll probably go see it just not come opening week!

Maybe Steve's mom dies? And as long as Big doesn't die, I'm definately going to be seeing this movie!

ladyevenstar22 - my thoughts exactly! I paid for HBO for years to watch them once a week, so I wouldn't mind one bit shelling out $10 to watch what would certainly be Carrie's rollicking, gaff-filled bachelorette weekend. I'll have to wait and see.....

I bet its a minor charachter who dies. Unless samantha has a relapse?

You know, I'm wondering if the death might be related to them addressing Sept. 11. The show wrapped before those events, and the city is such a major part of the show (after all, it gets top billing with "sex!") that it would be hard to capture the general feeling of the city in the intervening years without addressing it. I wonder if there's a minor charachter or former boyfriend or lover who died in the attacks and there will be mantion of him/her.

All you posters are ridiculous. If you are a fan of Sex and The city or even fond of the show, you must see the movie whether he dies or not. And if you don't see it opening weekend, do you really want everyone who did see it, to ruin the surprises for you?

SATC lasted at least until '03. They purposely avoided 9/11 because there was no way the show could appropriately incorporate it. And if they pick this movie to make up for that, my guess is it'll close within a week of it's open - - not that I think they'd make that mistake.

I can't wait to see the movie! I wish more cable and television shows would do a summer movie. Sure beats all those re-runs we get stuck with :P

I will be there opening weekend no matter what. But they BETTER NOT kill Mr. Big! I'm finally getting over my anger at SJP (yes!!) because she's the one who wanted to end the show. They still had a good 2 years of shows left in them.
It wouldn't be the same without all the girls. I'm glad they waited until they all said yes.

Sex And The City had it's final episode on February 22, 2004, well after the events of 9/11. The only reference to it that was ever made on the show was a close-up of a snow globe that had a New York skyline, including the World Trade Center inside of it, and that was at the end of the first new episode they had filmed after 9/11 took place.

As far as Mr.Big dying in the movie, I sure hope that doesn't happen. That would be a cruel twist to an otherwise fun movie that many fans have been looking forward to. Personally, I can't wait to see my girls again! I hope the movie is just as fun as the TV show was.

I never really got into the show (it is not really a guy program, and it did not help me much understanding women) -- but this is a movie with a narrow audience, and other than woman dragging their boyfriends out to see it, they will probably make up the cost of this movie on video sales or pay per view. Maybe there is some minor death in the movie that prevents the wedding from taking place. From the episodes of the series I have seen, things never seemed to work out wonderful for any of these woman in the end; it was just basically about the friendship between these woman. When all else fails in your life, you still have your best girl friends. If that was the entire theme of the series, I must assume that it is the theme of the movie. No big surprises, but just more of the same.
