Downey Jr. to Fight More Crime as Sherlock Holmes

Making his first professional move since trampling box offices as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. has taken the role of Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming, eponymous drama from Warner Bros. Guy Ritchie (aka Mrs. Madonna) will direct, leaving fingers crossed we'll get some Lock, Stock-style grit and shoot-em-up action.

If the movie sounds familiar, it's because it is: Columbia Pictures is putting together a comedic take on the classic tale with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell — at least, we're assuming it will be a comedy.

Shooting for Downey's crime-solving movie will kick off in October. In the meantime: Which version would you rather see? (Think: A pipe-smoking Borat vs. Iron Man in a cloak. I know. It's a tough one.) — Anna Dimond

A comedy version of Sherlock Holmes would absolutely suck. Horrible idea to make a comedy out of that type of material.

You'd have to pay me to watch a comedy version of Sherlock Holmes! (I know that typically one says 'You'd have to pay me', but I make $5.40 an hour. I might jump in front of a bus if you paid me. lol)

Seriously though, I think this will rock. If they can make a Pirates of the Carribean/Count of Monte Cristo thing where its still set in the olden days but has a slick feel to it (The rumored sword fighting sounds awesome) then this could be good. I used to watch the old Jeremey Brett versions with my mom on Mystery when I was a kid. As I remember those were good. With Robert Downey in the role, and the promise of a dark yet fun film, I am hopefully optimistic

We already have a comedic version of Sherlock Holmes -- it's called The Pink Panther. I hope RDJ's version holds true to the original angst of the series.

BTW, shouldn't the snark be "Mr. Madonna"?

Does anyone remember Gene Wilder in "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother"? It was hilarious. I'd like to see both versions. If the funny one was done well it would be great.

I am so over Will Farrell and don't even get me started on S.B. Cohen (UGH). But RDJ is THE best!! Can't wait for that version

Sorry, I can't really imagine RDJ as Sherlock Holmes:|.In my mind the only perfect Holmes is Hugh Laurie: tall, muscular, witty and intelligent. And do I have to remind you of his fantastic British accent? Will RDJ be able to be as convincing as a Briton as Laurie is as an American? I hope so.

What a monumentally bad idea. Awful. Uck!!!! Please, go watch the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries with Jeremy Brett on PBS to see what class storytelling and acting are all about.

Wow! No one has metioned THE Sherlock Holmes - Basil Rathbone. My mother loved the old black and white movies, so naturally I was raised on them. I'm cautght between thinking no one can replace Basil therefore only a comedy would work, and thinking "This is Sherlock Holmes! Why not try a big budget, Hollywood film to capture the original essense." Of course, the Watson in Rathbone's films is not based on the actual character of the books. It was with Bruce that Watsone first got serious screen time by turning the Watson character into a comedy role.
Of the two films mentioned, I do have to go with the majority. Since they are making comedies, I think RDJ version will probably be a smarter comedy as opposed to Will Ferrill's version, which will most likely just be juvenille, stupid 'comedy". i'll be seeing RDJ's version.

I'll pass on anything with Sacha Baron Cohen in it, thanks very much.

This is wrong in so many ways. Anybody who has seen the BBC series starring the late, great Jeremy Brett will be horrified. Remember Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot????

Don't forget (or do check it out) "Without a Clue," with Michael Caine as a drunken actor playing Sherlock Holmes as hired by the real genius, Ben Kingsley's Dr. Watson. I loved this movie, and it had a sight gag (rope swing) in it that made me laugh for five minutes in the theater (one of those that you try to hold in, and it just gets worse). Twenty years ago, and I remember that experience so clearly.
