Juno's Ellen Page to Take in Some Eyre

BBC Films is developing a revival of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, and has attached Ellen Page to front the period piece.

Page, Oscar-nominated for her turn in Juno, next can be seen in the roller-derby comedy Whip It! and the dramatic thriller Peacock.

What's your take? Think the utterly contemporary teen can fit into Bronte's world? — MWM

Absolutely! I think that Ellen Page is very talented.

Ellen Page is a lovely young woman and a fine actress, but I think she's too young and too pretty to play Jane Eyre. She does have the acting chops for it, however. If this happens, I would love, love, LOVE to see Christian Bale as Rochester (I would love, love, LOVE to see Christian Bale in just about anything romantic).

Imzadi, Ellen Page may be too pretty but she is not too old for the role of Jane Eyre as the character is only 18 years old when she goes to work at Thornfield Hall. Also, Christian Bale may be too good looking for the role of Rochester but he certainly has the edge and talent for it.

Why on earth would they make Jane Eyre again so soon after the recent miniseries? Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens were perfectly cast. I thought they might be finally making a Thursday Next movie(The Eyre Affair), though Ellen Page is too young for that role. I like Ellen Page, but I'm having trouble thinking of a period piece that would work for her.

I completely agree with coffeeoftheweek. Why make a new Jane Eyre adaptation when the last one was made in 2006 and it still being shown on PBS? I really don't think I will watch this new adaptation since Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens were prefect as Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester. The chemistry and level of acting were superb :-p

If the new Jane Eyre goes into production, I wonder who they will cast as Mr. Rochester? I suggest Hugh Laurie or under-rated Ralph Fiennes. Then, I am not sure how convincing Ellen Page will be as Jane Eyre ?<img border=">

BlueeyedSara, Timothy Dalton played Rochester and, at least IMHO, he's drop dead gorgeous.

Harris4, how can you say Ralph Fiennes is underrated? I don't think so. He's very much respected for his talent. But if Christian Bale doesn't get it, then how about Ralph Fiennes equally talented (but much better looking) younger brother Joseph?

I also agree with coffeeoftheweek. the 2006 version was superb and had a fresh take on things without deviating from the story.

why try to top that?

Imzadi, I am very familiar with the Timothy Dalton version as it is my favorite version and I own the DVD set. BUT...that production was criticized mildly for having such a good-looking male lead. The novel emphasizes that Jane Eyre is not pretty and Edward Rochester is not handsome. If Ellen Page is too pretty for the role, then Christian Bale is too handsome.

That does not mean, however, that I wouldn't want to see talented and pretty people in those parts!:-p

coffeeoftheweek took the words out of my mouth. The recent version with Toby Stephens was spot-on perfect. And please understand this is probably my favorite novel of all time (well, that and Pillars of the Earth), I fell in love with the book at 14, and had reread it again just months before I happened to see the latest BBC version. That was an utter masterpiece, perfectly cast, perfectly written, and perfectly directed. Until then I'd never really "seen" the right Rochester since often they were performed by men way too old for the part. Gosh, that's a beautiful, beautiful adaptation.

As for Ellen Page, she's a lovely actress. I like my Canadian tv/movies, so I'd seen her in a few things before Juno, but I just don't see the point in her being involved in an unnecessary remake.

Ugh, this is what the 22 remake of Jane Eyre. Can't they remake any other of Charlotte Bronte's novels.

Jane Eyre is my favorite book and I've seen every single adaption. I loved last years adaption and a couple before that. I'm unhappy with Ellen Page. I don't find her very talented, I know many will disagree but I think she's one not. She's not right for Jane, sorry. I'm sure they'll cast a handsome 20 year old actor to play Rochester, I see where this is going.

I think James McAvoy would make a great Mr. Rochester.
