Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr., topped the box office with a $100.7 million weekend haul, and has taken in $104.2 mil since its Thursday premiere, the second-best opening ever for a nonsequel (trailing only the original Spider-Man). Iron Man marks the 10th-biggest opening of all time and the fourth-best for a superhero flick.

Placing second was Patrick Dempsey's Made of Honor, which earned $15.5 mil in its first weekend. Rounding out the top five were Baby Mama ($10.3 million), Forgetting Sarah Marshall ($6.1 mil, including $21 of my own) and Harold & Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay ($6 mil).

Overall, the box office was off 15 percent from a year ago (when Spider-Man 3 opened with $151.1 mil), and movie attendance this year to date is down six percent.

Iron Man was awesome -already planning for sequel! Robert Downey Jr is what drew me to go see the movie (normally hate comic book movies) and was he worth it!!

First movie in long time that my two teenage children and myself went to together and we all loved it!

Thanks to everyone who put this great movie together. Highly recommend to others.

OK, so someone tell me: Too loud/intense/violent for my 5-year-old sons? To date they have been exposed to X-Men 1 and 3 and Spider-Man 1. — MWM

Matt -- I went to an 8:40pm showing and there were all kinds of little kids (some under 5) there. It kinda pissed me off since my kids should have been in bed long before the film ended. But, as far as content goes, I don't think it was any worse than the other films your kids have seen. I would say go for it, but take them to a matinee!

It was a great flick! Robert Downey Jr did a surprisingly great job.

Perhaps McSquiffy has bad karma?

He's certainly not box office (or any other) magic. His acting is wooden, he has no charm, wit or humor... not even slightly good looking either. Plus I wouldn't spend my money to see a movie that stars a racist.

Iron Man was awesome! My 10 yr old daughter and I both loved it. There's one sex scene and some violence. I think five yr olds already exposed to comic book movies would be fine. Go and enjoy it. Why should you trust my opinion you may ask? I'm from the midwest so I've got bible belt cred. :)

Hard to believe that Iron Man beat out Made of Honor. :-p

Totally safe for 5 year olds, Matt. Light swearing (nothing you wouldn't have heard Wolverine utter) might be your only concern, but the violence is more action than blood. It stuck to its PG-13 rating closely but was never boring.

And if Marvel can keep this quality up for all of the intended solo movies, they'll rake in billions before they unleash the Avengers on us.

Matt -
check out www.pluggedinonline.com for their review - they do a great job of giving a summary of what you might find objectionable. It's all broken down into categories - sex, violence, drugs/alcohol, language. I have found it valuable when deciding whether to take my 9yr old son.

That said, I took my 9 yr old & he (&I) loved it. My only worry for a 5 yr old is the run time - well over 2 hrs.

Yes it did. I have not seen the movie yet, but the trailer is enough to prove it.
