Hancock topped the holiday weekend box office with a $66 million haul, making it Will Smith's eighth straight movie to debut at No. 1 (and his second-best opening, behind only I Am Legend). Since opening last Tuesday, the pic has taken in $107.3 mil.

Last week's champ, WALL-E, placed second with $33.4 million, bringing its total-to-date to $128.1 mil.

Rounding out the weekend's top five were Wanted ($20.6 million), Get Smart ($11.1 mil) and Kung Fu Panda ($7.5 mil).

Overall, says the AP, Fourth of July weekend business was down four percent from a year ago, when Transformers placed No. 1 with $70.5 million.

Meanwhile, was it nearly lost on anyone else that an Independence Day release starred a guy named Hancock? — Matt Mitovich

Oh, now that is funny. Until mentioned now.....yes it was nearly missed. I just hope the writers made it an intended pun (so to speak).

Loved, loved, loved the movie. What an interesting take on super heroes. Will Smith shines as usual, great actor. That is interesting about Hancock and 4th of July, I didn't put the two together. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

I hope this isn't considered "spoiler", but I felt like I had gone to 2 different movies when I left the theater. But this was definitely one of Will Smith's enjoyable movies. Smith either makes movies I enjoy, or that I have no desire to see. Luckily, he makes enough movies that if I decide not to see one, there's another coming out in a couple of months....

Matt, I'll bet very few people noticed the Independence Day release starring a guy named Hancock. All they think about now is Independence Day releases starring a guy named Smith! He has owned that weekend for years now and his "brand" on it is bigger than Hancock's signature on the Declaration!

I liked the movie up until the middle, where I don't want to go into details so I don't ruin it for anyone, but I also feel like I saw 2 different movies, 1 that was awesome and than the one that began in the middle that made no sense and completely ruined it for me.

The movie left me wanting more. I don't feel that the plot was developed enough. I watched a movie about a superhero who needs to get it together... What's next?

I really enjoyed it. I didn't see the twist coming at all. It blew me away!! Love it!

I liked it until we got to the....."Hi I'm your futureistic superhero wife from the past". It did nothing for the movie/story line and seemed rather silly.

We saw this movie this weekend (July 6) the place was packed and everyone loved it! Another hit for Big Willie.

The middle totally surprised us, but we loved it!

Jae Head, who plays Jason Batemon and Charleze Therons son in Hancock is from my town, I went to school with his parents and this is his first movie. We are all proud of him. He said Wil is very nice.

The original story that this movie was based on is SO much better, as were some of the prior versions of the script that have made the rounds.
It looks like "studio heads" got involved in this and "dummied it up" for mass appeal.
Audiences are FAR smarter than most Hollywood studio folks seem to believe. If a movie is well written, directed and acted and features a story that people can get into, they'll go see it.
Will Smith on July 4 is a "brand" at this point. They could have made the movie much darker and smarter and it still would have won the day.
The movie was a "popcorn" movie. It's reasonably entertaining while it lasts, but it could have been much more. People are still talking about Iron Man. Nobody will be talking about this movie for long.

That's true Darclyte. I honestly would rather go see Wanted again than this, and I'm a big Will Smith fan. I didn't really care much for I Am Legend either. I think my favorites are Men In Black and Enemy of the State and...that's about it.
