Wouldn't Bones' New Boss Have Known Basic Forensics?

You know, stuff like, whether a body was dead or alive when it was burned.

Let me explain.

When Dr. Brennan returns from visiting her newfound brother in North Carolina, she finds that her boss has hired a decidedly more people-friendly head of forensics, Dr. Camille Something-or-other. The woman, like Bones, is one of the forensics greats. (She was the chief coroner of New York before taking the job at the Jeffersonian.) But when Bones’ assistant Zach does that thing TV forensic folks tend to do when they start to list a bunch of symptoms that will lead them to a shocking conclusion, Cam doesn’t follow:

"Jagged edges to the breaks. Small fragments. Lack of circular or radiating fracture...," Zach says, going on and on.

"What does that mean?" Cam asks.

"That this man was dead for several hours before the train hit him," Bones answers.

Um, this may be a small thing, but shouldn’t new super-expert Cam have known that?

Rochell, I wondered the exact same thing! Surely this had come up before in her career.

Hey, I am no Cam apologist (I don't think she's a useful addition at all). But Bones' specialty is... well... *bones*. She (and Zack) should have far more knowledge about them than a forsenic scientist. I think of it as akin to the difference between a general practitioner and a specialist. The former could identify that there is a problem. The other could identify what the problem is.

That said, I don't like having Cam on the show.

Maybe she was testing him to see if *he* knew? ]<img border=">

LOL, I didn't even think of that. When it comes to Bones, I kind of treat it like Alias: if I turn my brain off, I'll enjoy it 20x more than if I were thinking throughout. (Especially Alias season 4...)

It was a good premiere, though, dispite the odd new boss. Just as long as she doesn't steal screen time away from Angela, I'll be okay with her. :)

I kinda felt like Booth was taking Cam's side against Bones, telling her how to make Bones accept her, what was that about?

It did seem like Booth was taking Cam's side for a while, a person who was already getting on my nerves because she couldnt decide if she wanted to be the cutesie boss who says stuff like "Zacaroni" and "I'm a Pidgeon on laxative" or whatever and then goes into "I'm big tough New York Coroner and I like nice stuff. Whatever. But we saw Booth totally take a dig at her when he tole Cam that 1) Bones doesn't intimidate and 2) "You are Human remains and she just hasn't made a decision yet."
I loved that line. I love David Boreanaz and I loved that line.

Gotta remember, too, that Cam has been "the boss" for a while. That means she probably hasn't been doing any actual work!

csquared - Dr. Goodman is his name. And yes I also miss him. One of my favorite lines of the first season was said about Dr. Goodman when he soothed Angela's ego after she felt like she wasn't contributing enough. Zack: "Apparently, all Angela had to hear was her job description in a deep African-American tone." Priceless. Jonathan Adams commanding presence is sorely missed.

Zach isn't an assistant, he's an intern. As such Bones is his teacher, and Cam, as the head of the department is too. Many times we have seen Bones ask Zach the same kind of questions to test his ability to reach a result from the information he gathers. If you watch ER the residents are always doing the same thing with the first year interns.
