« Is It Just Me?

Things Typed While Watching the Grammys

7:59 pm/ET: Truth: I just cut short a phone call with a friend because I think maybe J.T. will open the show, and I need to be alone for that.

8:00 pm: And in comes The Police. It's a reunion. That's cool. [Sniffle-sniff] No, I'm not disappointed. That's a lie. Yes I am.

8:07 pm: Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett just beat Timbaland and Nelly Furtado, and Wyclef and Shakira. For best pop collaboration. Have you ever heard their version of "For Once in My Life"? No? Me neither. They might as well call this the We Will Be Dead Soon Award.

8:16 pm: "Beautiful. I just want you to know you're my favorite girl." A man (Pharrell Williams) serenades a rotating bottle of Heineken. A cute bottle. This is what I'm competing against. Beer.

8:23 pm: Prince, Lionel Richie — nominated for best R&B album? Did the Academy time-warp back to 1986? Mary J. had better win.

8:33 pm: Love the green-speckled dress Fergie's wearing in the Candy's/Kohl's commercials. Why are the Grammy commercials better than the Super Bowl commercials this year?

8:33 pm: J.T.'s doing "What Goes Around," everybody quiet! I wish he'd do "My Love" or "Sexyback." Or at least get up from that piano and dance.... Wait. Wait. Here he goes... All right! But what's with the webcam-ish thing? Is this supposed to give me an idea of what it would be like to video-IM him?

9:08 pm: Thirty-four-year-old Wyclef can still do a back handspring, yet Shakira's dancers are a little stiff. There's something off about that. You need to work it, ladies, this is the Grammys. Unless you've been asked to tone it down so as not so show her up.

Whoa. Wait. I just lost track of time because I replayed the Shakira-Wyclef performance. (I'm loving my Divo!) Did whatshisname just hit Seal up for work?

Again, Mary J's taking us to church.

Who is the guy who is sitting next to Jamie Foxx texting? I mean really.

9:50 pm: I just came back from the kitchen and tried to fast-forward through Carrie Underwood. What do you mean I can't skip through live television? (Don't make me stop loving you, Divo!) Pardon me, it's not that I hate country music. I just don't care.

10:04 pm: I do believe the woman in the Nicoderm commercial is one-half of the crazy-sibling set from the second season of the It Factor. Sara Rivas, I think her name is.

10:11 pm: I am taking a good look at your face, Smokey. Does it hurt to blink?

10:15 pm: I love a good pop show. So much so that I don't even care that Chris Brown is dancing so hard that the boy can barely sing his own song — on the Grammys. (Where it's supposed to be about the music. Hello!) I'm just glad he's not faking it by lip-synching.

10:33 pm: One of James Brown's hype men places the late great's cape over the microphone. [Sound of me standing and applauding] Now that's how you say goodbye to the Godfather of Soul!

10:42 pm: Are they kidding me with the "Runaway Love" girls lining up holding candles? It's a message song. We get it.

10:54 pm: Robyn Troup won a Grammy moment with Justin Timberlake. Clearly she is not learning this for the first time, right now, as the lucky hussy is already wearing those earplug things singers wear. Still, talk about a dream come true. I will now not-so silently envy her on behalf of teen singers everywhere.

11:00 pm: Ah, J.T. I've seen what I wanted. I'm done now.

Justin Timberlake is dreamy. I didn't care for the close-up-Paula's Party-camera thing either. But at least he was giving us good skin. Even in that pesky t-zone area. But who did he think he was fooling during that pre-taped intro - he wrote the song about a 'friend'. Whatever, JT.

I love Shakira, but she has released other singles than Hips Don't Lie. She has performed the same song on like 5 different awards shows. The only things that were different were the costumes.

Is it just me (lol), or did this year's Grammys seem like NARAS's way of saying F-U President Bush? I'm no big fan of country music, but I do like some of the Dixie Chicks' stuff - including Not Ready To Make Nice. But come on. Record of the Year, maybe. But Album of the Year too - that can't be a coincidence.

Apparently "What Goes Around Comes Around" is about a friend who was engaged to Elisha Cuthbert and she cheated on him with a professional hockey player. I don't know if I believe that, but whoever it's about, it's my favorite song from that album. Anyway, I loved his performance besides when he took the camera into his own hands. His nose is not his best feature, and that's all I could look at. And he really didn't need to perform twice. They could've just given him one long one.

I too was disppointed that Shakira did "Hips Don't Lie" again, but it wasn't as bad as Beyonce up there for no good reason. I like her, but sometimes she needs to just sit down. And what was with putting John Mayer, Corrine Bailey Rae and John Legend together like that? It was a great performance, but they're all talented enough to get their own performances.

Yeah, but there was only so much time in the broadcast. It was nice to see all of them perform in some way or another. They sounded great!!

I did not like that Robin girl that got the moment with JT. Will someone please tell me why she won? She had the least chops out of the top 3.

OK, Rochelle, I totally knew the Police were opening the show. They were promoting it all over the place. Frankly, Sting and JT were the reasons I watched last night.

I agree. I thought Brenda Radney (i think that's her last name) should have won.

I loved that Sting is still hot. I had one of my kids bring me my "Spirits in the Material World" record album. My older one remarked, "Oh yeah these dudes are old if they have records". Brat, but she was right. My younger one loves Prince. I lost the record version years ago, but I have the CD "1999". I showed her the inner cover of Prince's tushie. It just isn't the same as the album. I'm sorry but magnifying glasses are needed to see a CD cover. With the record sleeves things were big enough to see everything. Plus they made great posters. Geez, I feel old...lol

Dixie Chicks got album of the year because it's a great album. NRTMN is a decent song, but many of the others are even better. They deserved to win.

Ok, I haven't watched the Grammy's yet, I DVR'd them so I'll watch when I get home from work. Just wanted to comment that I saw JT in concert last week (it was so fantastic I bought tickets the very next day for the show next month) Anyway, he does the hand held camera thing during the concert and it's actually pretty cool. I can imagine it probably wasn't as good on tv. Anyway, just wanted to say to anyone that loves JT, if he's touring near you try to make the effort to go see the show, it's one of the best concerts I've ever been too (sorry Aerosmith & Kid Rock, I'll always love you, but JT was just so damn sexy!!)

tjj50, yes the show is only so long but they found enough time for Justint to perform twice. They all got seriously jipped in my mind.

I know I'm writing this about a week late, and it will probably not be seen, but I could not believe my eyes when I read one of the comments Rochell Thomas wrote in this blog, referring to the Stevie Wonder/Tony Bennett win: "They might as call this the We'll Be Dead Soon Award."

What a despicable thing to say by an editor of a respected magazine like TV Guide. It was a cheap, unfunny, and highly disrespectful comment about two legends of the recording industry who have accomplished so much more in their profession than you obviously will in yours, Ms. Thomas. Your comment was disgraceful.

Are you of the late baby-boomer or Gen-X mindset that disregards every achievement that occurred before your own birth, or dismisses older entertainers because they aren't part of the current, flash-in-the-pan fads in pop culture?

I'll be turning the page to skip over your column in my weekly TV Guide, now that I've seen what a shallow, vapid person you are.
