Would You Pay $3,000 for a Project Runway Dress?

The cocktail dress Laura made on last night's Project Runway is already up to $760 on the Seen On! auction site www.seenon.com. Considering someone paid $1,705 for the "recycled trash" dress the yuppie Manhattanite made out of a discarded peanut sack earlier this season, plus the fact that there are still six days left before the latest auction closes, you know Laura's cocktail thingy will go for well over $2,000 if not $3,000. And that fact makes my head hurt a little.

While I'm talking about Project Runway sales, someone named LindaJeanne paid $1,455 for Angela's little number from Episode 4, and Kara dropped $1,900 for Kayne's formal gown from last week's Paris episode. Now I won't front: They're all darling creations; Laura's cocktail gown was especially cute. And the proceeds do go to a good cause (an organization called Dress for Success). But dang. Do people just have money to burn? I mean, really. Why else would you spend $2,000 for something you know without a doubt was made for $100 or less? (I think the designers got to spend a whopping $300 for the ballroom gowns they made in Paris.) Somebody please explain this to me: What's the thinking behind this purchase? Do people so want to own a piece of something almost famous that they'll buy a rush-job dress they know was made in one day? Will they actually wear their Project Runway outfits? Maybe they're hoping these items will become collectibles? Or is this what true fashionistas do and I just don't understand it because I own only a few things that didn't come from The LB (that's fat-girl code for Lane Bryant)? If you've ever purchased something made on Project Runway, please, please, please drop me a few lines; I would love to talk. Or, better yet, send me a photo of you wearing said item.

I wanted to get a Kara Janx dress from her collection and I wouldn't even pay that much (about $300) for NEW dress!

Rochelle,

So with you. They paid $75 for their travel outfit, and people are bidding crazy numbers. Though I like the outfits, in the non-LB (I knew exactly what you meant, as I shop the LB, too) world, they pay that much or more for band-aids and call them mini-skirts, so it doesn't surprise me all that much.

OK, as another LB girl, who has finally started to kick her butt into gear and lose weight (I'm down 45 lbs!) I'm finding that LB clothes are of an exeedingly higher quality then clothes of the similarly priced "normal sized" stores. Seriously, it is all CRAP! I'm not down enough to fit into Express or The Limited, maybe they are better... And maybe I'm just super bitter that Macy's took over our Marshall Fields and the quality of the merchandise as well as the quality of the sales. has gone down significantly. Since Macy's has taken over we've had like four big sales. These BIG sales have been on only Style Co. & Charter Club, their own brands...Blah, boring and cheeply made. Myabe I'll go eat a pizza...

I totally agree; over the past few years LB's quality and variety have improved greatly. I still remember the days where all their jeans had elastic waists and they sold mostly t-shirts, turtlenecks, and oversized (sometimes holiday themed!) sweaters, but there new clothing lines have been so cute that some of my skinny friends have wished for them. Unless I just had money to burn I would never be able to spend so much money on a "Project Runway" dress, and I can't imagine the people buying them intend to actually wear them. $3000 dollars for a dress you aren't going to wear from a contestant on a reality show who may or may not end up being a "real" designer? Ridiculous! :)

I would've bought Jeffrey's newspaper print, trompe l'oeil belt, dress if I coulda...(& if I had that kind of cash lying around). But you're right, I didn't so much want to wear it, as I wanted to hang it on my wall...like art! So it's a good thing I didn't know about the auction, 'cause I can't really afford such expensive "art".

I agree about the LB! As a small girl, I often notice how crappy the clothes in most stores are made, and have been jealous more than once that I couldn't get stuff in my size at the LB.....Perhaps they should start an LB-Mini store???

If I had money I would, the fact is that it's like getting something a celebrity wore. It's the fact that you can say, hey guess what, I have Laura from project runway's dress. it's the fact that you're the only one who has it and it was on a popular tv show... thats why its so much money....

That cute(ish) pants outfit that won the Macy's challenge will be mass produced and sold for how much? I mean it's Macy's so probably more than I'd like to spend on something do cheeply made but much much much much less than people are paying for them on these auctions! Yikes!

In Macy's, I believe the outfit to be about $240ish. We saw it recently, but I can't remember exactly. I would have spent a bit on Robert's first creation. The white dress made from the apartment items. I thought it was adorable.
