« Is It Just Me?

A Little Unnecessary Nudeness

Normally I applaud the authenticity of HBO?s The Wire. Clearly, that show?s writers do their homework. But when Herc walked in on Mayor Royce and his chicken-heading assistant at the start of last week?s episode there was a graphic, split-second flash of what I can only hope was faux frontal nudity. It was a naughty bit. And it was totally uncalled for.

But this is HBO. So, you know, I was willing to let it go.

But then last night, they did it again. At the beginning of the episode, Omar climbs out of bed buck naked to go investigate a loud noise. The killer dope-dealer supreme goes to the window, looks out then turns to face the camera and ? Hello Baltimore! ? there?s Lil Omar. Compared to last week?s sex act, Omar?s frontal flash was fairly innocent. But still, this is the second week in a row they've started off with a not-so-wee-wee peep show and I?m starting to wonder if The Wire folks think they have to shock us into paying attention. 'Cause that?s not true, guys. I would watch even if you didn?t show which way Lil Omar sways. Heck, I watch in spite of it. Maybe I?m turning into a prude. But seeing the mayor and Omar's business was just a full-on case of Unnecessary Nudeness. Not nudity, people. But nudeness.

Do tell: What is the difference between nudity and nudeness? Or is nudeness just unnecessary nudity?

Sometimes a little unnecessary "nudeness" can be fun.. <g> But you need to talk to the website administrator about all these "?" that appear in your (and many othe's) columns. This ruins the flow of reading them, and is so annoying..

I'll only take the "nudeness" if it's somebody that's yummy like for instance Wentworth Miller. Anybody else better keep their shorts on!

I notice that nobody is objecting to the "nudeness" of Marg Helgenberger on the season premiere of "CSI". Or was that because it was integral to the story?

I don't have HBO but I am glad to hear that they're showing the full monty on the guys. I have seen more breasts and bush than I ever wanted to. It is a rare occasion to see the guys. Yeah HBO.

Regarding Rochell's ?question marks?...

My guess is that she composes her blog entries in Microsoft Word and then copy/pastes the text into the TVGuide.com field. When typing quotes and apostrophes in Word, Word uses what is called "Smart Quotes". Instead of being straight up and down generic quotes and apostrophes, they curve into the word they're near depending on where they're placed. In this website, they don't recognize "Smart Quotes", so it turns all quotes and apostrophes from the paste from Word into "?".

All Rochelle et. al. has to do once they paste the text from Word into the TVGuide blog is simply replace all the quotes and apostrophes with the generic ones. I'm surprised they haven't caught onto this yet...

FelineFan55, you ALWAYS write what I'm thinking in TVGuide.com. It sometimes gets so that I don't even have to comment on anything myself because you already wrote it. So, keep on posting, you save me a lot of time! LOL! ;)

FYI, you can turn off the autoformatting of quotes in Word, so you wouldn't have to replace all the apostrophes, etc, after copying your text. Go to Tools --> Auto Correct Options... --> AutoFormat As You Type and uncheck "Straight quotes with smart quotes". Of course, getting to that option is probably slightly different depending on your version of Word, because Microsoft is awesome like that.

This also seems to apply to hyphens and bullets that Word helpfully "fixes" for you, and all that stuff can be customized.

Don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try.

Yeah, I was going to mention the Word Options and unchecking the "Replace Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes" but I figured if TVG couldn't figure out why they were getting ?s in their posts, that baby steps were in order at this point. Personally, I like having Smart Quotes on, so I leave it as is. But if that's what the TVG bloggers are indeed doing, they that would be the best course of action for them since it's their job and they do it so frequently. :)

Why are you surprised by HBO ? All they want in their new programming is male frontal nudity only !!! The complete double standard network.
