Finale Preview: "Imagine" What the Davids Will Sing!
David Archuleta and David Cook by Michael Becker/Fox
Calling into Ryan Seacrest's radio show, American Idol executive produeer Nigel Lythgoe shed a bit of light on what Davids Archuleta and Cook will sing on Tuesday night in order to cement their fate (one way or the other) in this year's competition.
Each finalist will perform three songs: One picked by uberproducer Clive Davis; one selected by viewers from some sort of online "Top 10" list; and one of the singer's own choosing — either a tune they have tackled on Idol before, or something new. (Regarding the latter, Lythgoe revealed that David A. has already opted to give us an encore of "Imagine.")
As for Wednesday's results show, Lythgoe teased some Celine-and-Elvis-type videos featuring duets between singers living and not, and appearances by "some young brothers" (Jonas? New Edition?) as well as "the biggest star in the world right now." Awww, I hope Ashlee didn’t have to cut her honeymoon short! — Matt Mitovich, with reporting by Erin Fox

Bad idea, we already know he did well on that song. I get the thinking here - it was his most impressive moment all season, and he wants us to remember it - but I think the finale is the time to prove he can do MORE. Hopefully David C. won't cop out like this.
And where was this viewer top 10 poll?
Edited to refine my statement (I am not spontaneously brilliant): By singing a song he sang very very early in the season (wasn't it the top 24?), he's basically telling us he hasn't gotten any better since then, and that is still the best he has to offer. Not a good message to send.

No kidding. Shock me, Archuleta, with your pick of Imagine. I saw that coming for a mile away. Granted, Cook will probably chose Always Be My Baby, but I hope he does something new. And I will throw something if Miley Cyrus starts to sing on my TV again.

i too figured archie would sing Imagine....very predictable.
anyone else noticing something glaringly missing? What happened to the IDOL SONGWRITERS WINNING SONG? Are they going to wait until the winner is declared and just let the winner sing it without performing it on tuesday? lol this is very bizarre!

That is my guess, yes — they don't have to sing it until they win. You say bizarre, I say "Godsend"! - MWM

Ugh--Clive Davis gets to pick? I don't deny that he's a hit-maker, but I can't forgive him for picking a Journey song for Elliott Yamin in the top-3 round. His other choices were pretty bad, too.
By the way, I think there's precedent for not singing the "new single" until the finale results... I'm pretty sure we heard it three times with Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini. Once by each of the finalists before the results are announced and then after results.

I don't care what David Cook sings or how he sounds, he will have as many of my votes as I can give him. He has been consistently wonderful all season long and deserves to win it all.

We do normally hear the songwriters song at this point don't we? Anyway, I'm not surprised either that David A will sing "Imagine". Since it made my ears bleed the first time, I will definately be changing the channel for that one. And, yeah where was this poll? On the AI wesbite?

footballfran: "where was this poll? On the AI wesbite?"
Hi fran! Yes, I think it's on the AI website. I seem to remember Ryan pimping it, er, I mean letting the fans know where they could see what songs were contenders for this season.
Imagine? Again? I mean, I thought he did a good job of it, but come on! How about giving us something you haven't sung before!
I believe I read or heard somewhere that the Jonas Brothers are going to be performing. I know that's my cue to leave the room and continue with my packing...

Great - so if the Jonas Brothers (and I assume, Miley Cyrus) are going to be at the AI finale, would it be too much of a guess that Phi Kappa Bimbo will have their arms up in full-on sway mode? Oh, goody. *rolls eyes*
As for hearing the songwriters' song after the AI winner's announced, I'm all for it. At least we won't have to hear yet another schmaltzy ballad on Tuesday!
And, speaking of ballads - while I don't fault David A. performing "Imagine" once again, I really would've liked to see him do something new.

"one selected by viewers from some sort of online "Top 10" list"
I believe this is the songwriting contest to choose the smaltzy cheesefest song for the winner.

More than watching whomever it is perform, I'm fascinated to know exactly who Nigel considers "the biggest star in the world right now." Cause the AI idea of stardom and talent and my own barometer are very different scales of late.

Let me get this straight. The judges badger the contestants during the entire season about how important it is for them to learn to pick the right song, and now that we get to the final showdown, they don't get to pick the songs themselves? That is insane!
I am appalled that they are letting them repeat an earlier number. What a copout! If I wanted to listen to Imagine again, I can do it online. Jeez.
I have invested too many hours of my life watching AI this season, so I will not miss the show tomorrow, but the whole thing stinks of disappointment.
Hopefully, Cookie will win.

Why not sing something he sang so well the first time?

Dinora: I agree and I posted something similar on the other Blog before I read that they could choose a song they sang already. I think that's not a good idea because David A KNOWS that he did well on that song and for goodness sake, can't he do anything different? Show us already what he's got to be the American Idol. Then in all due fairness, I hope David C does "Billy Jean" again - which blew away David A's "Imagine" on the TV Guide poll!!
