That's the great debate over last night's episode — When it came time for the judges to give their critique after the Top five's first batch of tunes, Paula jumped the gun and began commenting on Jason Castro's first and second performance for the evening from her notes. Only problem was he only performed once! But while some are saying Paula's slip up last night was due to the fact to she's just being "drunken Paula," others are saying that this is just proof that the Idol is scripted.
Your take: Do you think Paula's mistake is proof that Idol is scripted, or is it just Paula being...well...Paula?
Ooooh, now I get it... She wasn't drunk or simply dumb... She had everything written on a card... But Seacrest turned to the judges after the first, not the second performance so that totally confused her...
I have heard on my local news that the clips of the contestants that are shown during the recap are actually of the previous night's dress rehearsal. The headline was something about "Do you think the contestants often sound better in the recap? They just might!" So, perhaps the judges sit in on that as well. I know those replay clips aren't from that night's performance so it wouldn't surprise me if the judges hear the previous night's performance and that's what Paula was commenting on. Granted...if that's the case, Paula should have known better than to slip up like that! But it would make sense as to why she had commented on his second song and why she may have had notes on it.
drunk or not - I couldn't say...But she did explain her mistake if you listened real close.. they each took written notes during the first set of songs. She was talking about David Cook - the second singer, when she misspoke and called it Jason's second song. She explained it again later in the show. I would say that the new format for last night had everyone thrown off thier normal routine.
The idea that the judges are giving accurate notes on the performances on the night of the taping is absurd. For years, I've been wondering if the judges are even listening to the same performance that I am, and this is just a little bit more evidence that they're not. Odds are, they have comments written for them in advance, so they can push the votes in the direction that the producers want, if the votes count at all. This is further proven by the great comments that David Archuleta got after completely butchering two of Neil Diamond's songs last night. Meanwhile, Jason got horrible comments for performances that were way better than David A's.
Oh, Paula. It is hard remembering that in the previous thirty minutes you watched each contestant perform only one time, isn't it? Something is definitely going on here, but I would agree that she must have been looking at notes from rehearsal. She did say she was looking at the notes for David C. (backpedaling), but that doesn't actually make sense b/c she said to Jason that on his second song he lacked his usual charm, but then turned around and told David that he was fantastic and sang a song that wasn't well known.
I don't think there is a need to start a trash Paula campaign!
The explanation is quite simple: the judges see the dressed rehearsals just before the show and Simon once said that unless they performed totally different from the rehearsal, their minds where pretty much made up before the show.
It also explains why the judges, although mostly Simon, usually doesn't bother to look and chooses to simply isten instead to see how it comes out with a filled to capacity theater.
I agree with informant. I often hear them praise a song that was botched or diss a song that was good. Either they are trying to influence the votes (My believe) or they are basing it on a different performance. Either way, reality TV is rarely real.
This debacle has nothing to do with the rehearsal notes or Paula being drunk or "spacy," as some people are trying to claim as excuses. She explained it all on Ryan's radio show this morning: Paula: "I was reading the critique of what I was writing for Jason Castro, and on the same page that I wrote, was also David's, and I got lost on my notes, and that's as simple as it was. I did catch the last minute of Jason Castro" (the rehearsal she watched on the monitor). Ryan: "So what you are saying is, you were talking about two different people, but accidentally you said 'second song.' " Paula: "Yes." Obviously it was not David Cook's note she was reading. "I felt like your usual charm was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty. And the two songs made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top 4," but then David is "fantastic" and she's looking at "the next American Idol"? She was reading a script. C'mon.
We've been hearing excuses for Paula's behavior all day and indeed since the premier of this show. Enough already, for the love of God if this woman is drunk, high or just plain stupid, someone please get her some help immediately. Her mistake has ruined it for me as a viewer. She needs to apologize to sweet Jason tonight in a big way. If he goes home tonight, I will not be watching another AI show ever again. I choose not to watch a live show that is scripted, Sorry!
I believe its the typical trash tv that celebs are subjected to. Frankly anything is up for grabs as news. Does it really matter or simply does the talent in the long run overcome? I say leave paula alone and its our votes that will decide a winner anyways.
