Kristy Lee Cook: Standing Firm, Even on the Way Out
Kristy Lee Cook by Frank Micelotta/Fox
Despite having found her stride in recent weeks (not to mention getting a wedding proposal after her ousting), last night was Kristy Lee Cook's final one as an Idol contestant. Thursday, she found herself giving exit interviews, and reflected on the highs and lows of her Idol run, plus what she sees on the horizon.
After multiple weeks in the bottom three, repeated verbal beat-downs from Simon and now being off the show, Cook says the experience made her a stronger person. "It's tough being in the bottom three," she conceded, but she grew a thicker skin. "I got a little tougher each time," she explained, "and finally, learned to control the emotions."
Sometimes, though, Cook could not just keep quiet, like, for instance, when she called Simon a "butt." Cook explained, "He's got his own little remarks that are not very nice to people, and after a time, it kind of builds up. So I just was saying a nice word but telling him he's a little butt sometimes, he's a little brat. I was debating between 'brat' and 'butt.'"
Even with her tough exterior, though, Cook said that the contestant-dividing results moment Wednesday night was still nerve-racking. "It was a whole whirlwind of things going on," she confided. "It was definitely a shock for me to go home." And after the Michael Johns debacle of last week, Cook knew that none of them were really safe.
The songstress leaves behind a legacy of standing up for herself, attempting to put Simon in his place, and lasting longer than he had anticipated. Cook believes she started out weak — thanks to sickness at the start of the competition — but really hit her groove with songs she was "comfortable with," like "God Bless the USA" and this week's "Forever." To her, she had her best performances this week, during which she felt she connected with the music and put out her best vocals yet. "I thought I had at least another week in me," she said.
Up next for Ms. Cook, though, is more than just the Idol tour, at which, she promises, she'll be singing the kinds of songs she likes and putting on a great show. With an engagement that officially began with a proposal in a sauna in March — no, Cook is not kidding — and played out again after she was voted off, Kristy Lee may be walking down the aisle by summer 2009. And as for the guest list? Yes, she might even invite Simon. — Anna Dimond

I think Kristy was way off base in being upset with Simon. Fact is that her performance improved the last few weeks because Simon was dogging her and making her emotional and upset. She got more intense and her performance improved.
It may not be fun, but a lot of times people only get better when you ride them and give them a hard time.

I agree, he does that with everyone and he is just being honest... truth be told, she should have been gone a long time ago! He gave her credit when she deserved it, and criticism too... people annoy me when they go on this show and get all upset when they have someone say something they don't want to hear, how many years has this show been on, it is not like they don't know what they are gonna get when they go on! You have to have thick skin to be in that business, Simon isn't the only person who is going to say bad things about her.

Let's face it, Kristy Lee made it much farther than she should have. Michael Johns never should have gone before her. She couldn't hit the Mariah low notes and only did one or two decent songs the entire time she was on. Simon was absolutely right to criticize her but unfortunately, she took it personally instead of understanding he was really trying to help her out. He certainly didn't get to his position in the music industry by being wrong or a "butt" to wannabes like Kristy Lee. His latest talent Leona Lewis sold 200,000 her first week. Kristy will be lucky to sell that in her entire career. Sorry KLC fans but Simon is right!

KLC did a great job the last 3 weeks on the show. She should be proud of the job she did.I always thought her and Simon were just playing with each other and I never took either one's comments to each other seriously.Best of luck to KLC and congratualtions on the upcoming marriage...and I hope you get your old horse back!

I did see a lot of progress in Kristy Lee since she started and I agree that she stepped it up in response to the criticism from Simon, and probably from being in the bottom 3. Sorry to see her go 'cause I liked her ever since the tryouts but at least she'll be able to do the tour...and as mentioned, hope she can be reunited with her horse!

I do agree Kristy had gotten better in past weeks and that this week was one of her best. Unfortnately the talent pool this time is tough. I was shocked that Michael Johns left so soon, especially before Kristy or Brooke or Syesha but that again goes to show you have to vote for the one you want to win--no one is safe. I see David versus David in the final though in case ya were wondering!

I didn't think she had enough talent compared to other contestants on the show but I voted for her 50 times this week and I think the producers are controling the outcome. Voting so many times took awhile and I did hear busy signal every so often. I just wanted her to stay a bit longer so she would a chance going someplace in the entainment business. Oh well. I might quit watching American Idol.

I'm not picking another Idol! They've already voted off the two best: Amanda from Indiana, and Michael Johns, leaving people like Kristy and Syesha for another week. Obviously this year the word is out: Vote off the best first!
