David Cook to Slam Dunk NBA Finals Performance

David Cook's not only slam-dunked a win as this year's Idol, but now he's bouncing his way to the Staples Center parquet to perform at Game 3 of the NBA finals. The June 10 performance will be Cook's first at a major sporting event (but probably not his last).

Cook's upcoming game-night appearance upholds an ongoing NBA-Idol tradition in which each year's new AI winner takes the mic during the NBA finals in June. In previous years, Cook's predecessors Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Jordin Sparks have all performed during the basketball face-off. Here's hoping that Cook's recent victory will bode well for Boston following his arena serenade. — Anna Dimond

I'm trying to figure out why reports keep saying that this will be his first appearance at a major sporting event when we clearly saw him throw out the first pitch and then sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at a Kansas City Royals game while he was still on American Idol.

Maybe you should say it's his first appearance at a major sporting event as the American Idol.

The operative words there would be "major sporting event" and "Kansas City Royals." :^O

I'd say an NBA Finals game ranks as more major than just a regular season MLB game.

He didn't sing the anthem at the baseball game. I think he has the voice to do that tough song justice. Can't wait to hear his version.

People shouldn't change the National Anthem, it should be sung how it was written. It's the national anthem, it deserves respect.

Being from MA I'm looking fwd to see how the Celtics do in LA.

Go Celtics!!! Beat LA!!!

I haven't seen the Anthem performed yet during the Finals, but I may have to tune in early to see DC.

Thanks for the note Matt.

After watching the video of David Cook singing at the NBA finals game, I want to note that I think he did a fine rendition of the song as have his predecessors. However, if he read the music that goes with the words to this song, he would see that when singing the word 'banner', there are only 3 notes with that word, not 4. So many professionals that sing this song do it from the memory of singing or hearing it sung throughout their lives, and so many of them sing it incorrectly. It is a song of too much importance not to sing as it was written.
