David Cooking Up a CD to "Make the Hair on the Back of Your Neck Stand Up"
David Cook by Michael Becker/Fox
Ask David Cook if, some 36 hours into his reign as the new American Idol, he will ever get used to the hoopla, and he will tell you, "Hopefully never!" Still, he's starting to give some thought to his first album as your Idol, and it sounds like he will stop shot of nothing less than a doozy.
Hoping to accommodate "a mixture of my own [song]writing and hopefully writing with some other people," he tells TVGuide.com, "The bottom line is I want to come out of the gate with a solid record. If I could do that, I'll be happy."
As for the type of release he has in mind, Cook concedes, rather obviously, "It will probably be a rock record." But, he adds, "That's a pretty vague generalization. I just want to make a record that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up."
And when might fans first get their mitts on Cook's first release as Idol? "'As soon as possible,' if you're asking me," he says. "But obviously these things take time."
David, of course, will drop by TVGuide.com in a few days for his video interview, where he will answer many reader questions. But for now, we solicited his response to one of your most burning queries: "How is it that this guy is single?" Cook let out a big laugh before answering with a shrug, "Well... I have no idea. That’s all I can say!" — Matt Mitovich

He truly deserves to win the Idol crown. I admire the humility this guy has shown all throughout the season. Someone the youth could look up to. His Itunes tracks have been ruling the radio countdowns in the Philippines, we can't wait for the after-idol singles! We wish him all the best and hope he visits our country soon!

Can I adopt you? I think what ever David comes up with will be great. But of course I am prejudiced. He was my favorite to win all along---born on my birthday in 1982. Had I ever had a son, I would hope he would make me as proud as your parents are of you. Best wishes for a long and successful career.

I am so looking forward to his first CD. He has a unique voice that is addicting. Although I will miss watching him sing (the eyes, the grins, the winks) I do have all of the video downloads to keep me company. David Cook is extraordinary. Can't wait to see him in person on the Idols tour this summer. Thank goodness America got it right this year and actually gave the title of American Idol to the right guy.

I LOVE David Cook, think he's a breath of fresh air, and can't wait to see him on tour and to buy his CD.
I've been doing a lot of thinking about Idol and this is what I've concluded: David Cook, who is a fabulous, bright, creative, serious artist/singer/musician HAD to win in order to renew the show's credibility. In the last few years, the idol "brand" has been spiraling downward, losing its value for a variety of reasons, but most notably because many of the winners have failed to live up to the hype the show created for them. Instead, also-rans have trumped actual winners with bigger post-Idol sales, tours, and chart-topping singles.
Idol needed a winner comparable to Kelly Clarkson in talent (the most versatile singer to ever grace the Idol stage) and Carrie Underwood in marketability (arguably the new queen of Country Billboard and FM) to reinvigorate the series and substantiate its relevance as the most vital talent competition in the country (possibly the world). Am I being hyperbolic? Maybe, but not by much.
As sweet as Jordin Sparks is, her CD hasn't even gone platinum. And as charismatic as Taylor Hicks is on stage, his faltering sales got him dropped by his label. Same goes for Rueben. (And Bo and McPhever.) And if Fantasia's recent Idol performance is any indication of her musical "growth" since Season 3, she is not long for the very competitive world of R&B.
Indeed, Idol needed David Cook to win. Because as lovely a singer as Archie is, he is just not ready for the industry. He needs to mature in more ways than one before his true "day of arrival" on the American music scene.
David Cook, however, is more than "ready." Even better, he's wanted. His crushing victory this week proves just how much America appreciated his talent and dedication to AI throughout the entire season. Heck, even the president's daughter said on The Tonight Show this week that she voted for Cookie 40 times! That's how far-reaching David's affect on us has been. And that is going to translate into HUGE record sales, and likely some well-deserved awards for his innovative approach, which we've all had the pleasure of experiencing.
But it's not just about his substantial retail value to Clive Davis and the gang. What David has done for Idol is show OTHER currently unknown musical phenoms that wearing the Idol title these days can still be "cool." It's still relevant and valuable and a fantastic way to open the door to dreams they might feel are otherwise unattainable. And that's EXACTLY the advertising that Idol needs to keep the talent pool from diminishing. And, more bluntly to keep the freaks and mediocre in the audition room instead of on the main stage.
Cheers to David's brothers, Andrew and Aaron! One for pushing him through the audition doors, the other for inspiring him to live life and the Idol experience to the fullest. And cheers to David for a victory extremely well-deserved. May you have a long, successful, enriching career!

When he comes for the interview, please, please ask the following question:
Will you be releasing any of the materials you were working on pre-idol for the second self-produced album?
